City or Farm Toy Scene

State Fair Entries:

A county may submit the Grand Champion of this project for state fair entry.

Hand Out Available / No Manual

Beginner (grades 3-5)  

Intermediate (grades 6-8)  

Advanced (grades 9-12)

Exhibit Requirements:

  1. NO LEGOS ALLOWED!
  2. All displayscannot be larger than 3 feet (36 inches) wide by 3 feet (36 inches) deep and cannot be taller than 2 feet (24 inches).
  1. All exhibits MUST include an index card explaining your project.  This is the 4-H Craft Card – Available from the Extension Office.

Beginner (Grades 3 -5):

  • Exhibit a city or farm scene display not to exceed 3’ wide x 3’ deep x 2’ high in size. – Outside dimensions. This includes any and all protection (Plexiglass, etc.) that is used.
  • Display must be built on rigid wood (i.e. plywood).
  • Include NOT MORE THAN 20 ITEMS (pieces). Roads, lanes, trees, light poles, fencerows, and a backdrop may be used to set off field or fields – but ARE NOT included in your maximum items count.
  • Can use 1 pre-built/manufactured structure such as a barn, building or house. (ONLY IN BEGINNERS)
  • Any combination of items may be used but:
    • Up to 1 structure (barn, building, house, shed, silo, etc.) This CAN BE pre-built/manufactured structure.
    • Up to 8 animals
    • Up to 8 wheel toys (tractors, trucks, equipment, etc.)
    • Up to 8 extras (feeders, people, bales, etc.)
  • The same city or farm toys or layout may be used in more than one year but exhibits need to be changed, altered, or modified so as not to repeat the same exact exhibit.
  • Complete record sheet.
  • Intermediate (Grades 6 – 8):
  • Exhibit a city or farm scene display not to exceed 3’ wide x 3’ deep x 2’ high in size. – Outside dimensions. This includes any and all protection (Plexiglass, etc.) that is used.
  • Display must be built on rigid wood (i.e. plywood).
  • Include NOT MORE THAN 40 ITEMS (pieces). Roads, lanes, trees, light poles, fencerows, and a backdrop may be used to set off field or fields – but ARE NOT included in your maximum items count.
  • NO pre-manufactured scenes or buildings (example: fully assembled buildings or barns).
  • Any combination of items may be used but:
    • Not more than 3 structures (barn, building, house, shed, silo, etc.)
    • Not more than 15 animals  
    • Not more than 15 wheel toys (tractors, trucks, equipment, etc.) A tractor with an implement is considered 2 wheel toys.   
    • Not more than 15 extras (feeders, people, bales, etc.)
  • The same city or farm toys or layout maybe used in more than one year but exhibits need to be changed, altered, or modified so as not to repeat the same exact exhibit.
  • Complete Record sheet.
  • Advanced (Grades 9-12):
  • Exhibit a city or farm scene display not to exceed 3’ wide x 3’ deep x 2’ high in size. – Outside dimensions. This includes any and all protection (Plexiglass, etc.) that is used.
  • Display must be built on rigid wood.
  • This division is open to create any type of city or farm scene you want. Example: City Scene, Circus Scene, Industrial Scene, Farmstead (buildings, grain handling equipment, field work, harvesting), Farm Equipment Store, Auction, Historical Layout, Specialty Agriculture Layout, Farm Business layout, Livestock Emphasis layout, etc.
  • NO pre-manufactured scenes or buildings (example: fully assembled buildings or barns).
  • Include a short report, not more than 1 page, about “Why you chose this layout”, include explanation of layout, reason for choosing it, what your favorite piece is and why. This is to be turned in WITH your project for judging. 
  • The same city or farm toys or layout may be used in more than one year but exhibits need to be changed, altered, or modified so as not to repeat the same exact exhibit.
  • Complete record sheet.
