4-H Enrollment Update

Enrollment on  https://www.4honline.com/ will remain open, but after the February Newsletter you’ll no longer receive 4-H updates of events, deadlines, and other important reminders and enrollment must be completed by May 15 to exhibit at the fair.

Annual enrollment is the best time to review and update your contact information, the family email address you provide is our primary contact to you! It is also a great time to think about new 4-H projects or clubs you're interested in adding for the new 4-H year.

New Member Meeting

There is a New Member & Parent Welcome meeting on Tuesday, February 20, 2024 in the Banquet Center (behind Culver’s, south end of grounds) at the Vigo County Fairgrounds.

Mini 4-H (K-2nd grade) Discussion 6 - 7 pm

Traditional 4-H (3rd-12th grade) Discussion 7 - 8 pm

Forces of Nature Spark Club

There’s still time to join! Explore the natural wonders with 4-H Forces of Nature natural resources SPARK Club. Learn about wildlife, soil & water conservation, weather & climate science, and geology. This SPARK club will meet virtually one Wednesday a month, and in person one Saturday a month January through April. To find out more click here!

Junior Leaders 4-H Club

Junior Leaders is open to any youth currently in grades 7-12 enrolled in Vigo County 4-H. The club focuses on creating leadership opportunities through community service, mentoring, and fundraising. Members are able to travel for club trips, state 4-H trips at Purdue, and apply for local and state 4-H scholarships. Junior Leaders is a great way to build friendships across the county and state! The next meeting is February 13 at 6:30 pm at the Community Center at the fairgrounds. Contact either 4-H Educator for more details.

Interested in a CDE?

A CDE is a Career Development Event or a contest! We are currently recruiting for our Hippology Team. Hippology is a contest all about horses with a state contest March 23 at Purdue. For more information contact Sara at the Extension Office or Coach Karen Farmer at lucylilly53@gmail.com. Vigo County will be hosting the Area V Invitational Livestock Judging contest on May 3rd. If you’re interested in more information or volunteering at the event contact Sara at shaag@purdue.edu.

Quality Livestock Care

Animal Ethics Training Requirement

All beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, sheep, meat goats, dairy goats, poultry, and/or rabbits, 4-H members exhibiting at the Vigo County Fair and/or Indiana State Fair MUST be certified through the Indiana 4-H Quality Livestock Care OR Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) by June 18, 2024. Mini 4-Her’s are exempt from the training.

 

Indiana 4-H Quality Livestock Care is an annual program that will include an in-person session presented by an Extension Educator. Pre-registration is required on 4-H Online at https://VigoQLC.4honline.com. Once a 4-Her has attended the entirety of a session and participated in course activities, completion of the training will be documented in 4-H Online by the Educator. Trainings held in Vigo County will be free to Vigo County 4-H Members who completed 4-H enrollment by January 15th thanks to local sponsors. All other participants will pay the $3 fee at check-in. Those exhibiting at State Fair will need to request a completion certificate.

 

Youth for the Quality Care of Animals can be completed via online modules for $12 per member at http://yqcaprogram.org. Some national shows (especially swine) still require YQCA. There are a limited number of YQCA coupons left from previous years that can be used for online training. Contact Sara to receive a coupon code. Those completing YQCA MUST email a copy of the completion certificate to shaag@purdue.edu by June 18, 2024.

 

Vigo County trainings on will be held:

  • Saturday, February 3 from 11:00-Noon in the Community Center (Cattle Tag Day)
  • Friday, April 5 from 6:30-7:30 PM in the Community Center (Poultry Meeting)
  • Monday, May 13 from 6:00-7:00 PM in the Community Center (Rabbit Meeting)
  • Wednesday, June 5 from 6:00-7:00 PM in the Community Center
  • Monday, June 17 from 5:00-6:00 PM in the Community Center

Some training dates coincide with Vigo County 4-H club meeting dates, but the training is open to any youth. 4-Her’s only attend one training, even if exhibiting multiple species.
