4-H Open Enrollment Window Closes January 15th!

This means only approved 4-H members and volunteers will receive 4-H updates of events, deadlines, and other important reminders. Make sure to enroll at https://4honline.com/ by January 15th to stay in the know!

  Annual enrollment is the best time to review and update your contact information, the family email address you provide is our primary contact to you! It is also a great time to think about new 4-H projects or clubs you’re interested in adding for the new 4-H year.

*Vigo 4-H follows VCSC weather related guidance so if school is out or after-school activities are cancelled so are 4-H meetings.

FORCES OF NATURE SPARK CLUB

Sessions start Jan. 17, registration now! Explore the natural wonders with 4-H Forces of Nature natural resources SPARK Club. Learn about wildlife, soil & water conservation, weather & climate science, and geology. This SPARK club will meet virtually one Wednesday a month, and in person one Saturday a month January through April. For more information CLICK HERE!

JOIN JUNIOR LEADERS

Junior Leaders is open to any youth currently in grades 7-12 enrolled in Vigo County 4-H. The club focuses on creating leadership

opportunities through community service, mentoring, and fundraising. Members are able to travel for club trips, state 4-H trips at Purdue, and apply for local and state 4-H scholarships. Junior Leaders is a great way to build friendships across the county and state! The next meeting is January 9 at 6:30 pm at the Community Center at the fairgrounds. Contact either 4-H Educator for more details.

SCHOLARSHIPS

ime is running out to apply for 4-H Scholarships for members it grades 10-12! See the article on our website to video and application links.

 

  • Vigo County 4-H Council Scholarships are open to Juniors and Seniors while the Trevor Scamihorn Memorial Scholarship is only open to seniors. Both scholarships will utilize the “Indiana 4-H Senior Year Scholarship” Application that is due on January 25th. Watch the Vigo County 4-H Scholarship Opportunities video to learn more.
  • Indiana 4-H Foundation offers a variety of scholarships that are open to sophomores through college freshmen. All applications are due January 25th. For more information watch the Indiana 4-H Scholarship Opportunities video.

Sara Haag, 4-H Educator, will have open office hours on Tuesday, January 9th from 5:00 to 6:15 PM at the Fairgrounds’ Meeting Room to discuss any questions and provide feedback on applications. Please email shaag@purdue.edu to schedule a one-on-one session or to provide application feedback via email.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Do you know an adult that has an interest in teaching youth a new skill or serving as a club leader? We currently have Community 4-H Clubs in need of leaders. We are looking to add more SPARK Clubs also. A SPARK club consists of 6 or more hours on a special topic. (ex. Yoga, golfing, sewing, wildlife, almost anything!) Contact one of our 4-H Educators to learn more!

CATTLE TAG DAY

Cattle Tag day 2024 at the fairgrounds. Set up begins at 8:00am and tagging until 11am (or until done).

 4-H members are REQUIRED to bring their beef & dairy steers and commercial/grade heifers. Steers will be examined for castration. You can bring your registered heifers to get a required RFID tag. DNA collection envelopes for state fair animals will be available. All cattle must be identified in the Indiana 4-H Online ID Animal System https://v2.4honline.com/ by May 15, 2024 AND entered into fair classes via www.fairentry.com by June 18, 2024.

 Sara will hold the Indiana 4-H Quality Livestock Care (previously YQCA) class at 11am in the Community Center. To participate in this training, be in the Community Center prior to 11am, no pre-registration required.

 Tags will be $5 per an animal. $20 Beef Club dues will be collected at this time. The Beef Barn will hold a Chili Cook-off and meeting at the conclusion of tagging in the 4-H Meeting Room around noon. Families are encouraged to bring a crock pot of chili or a side to share. Table ware and water will be provided. Beef project updates will be discussed as well at members voting on the fair judge. Spring Cattle Tag Day for the bucket calf classes will be on May 11 at the fairgrounds from noon to 1 pm.

animal ethics training requirement

All beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, sheep, meat goats, dairy goats, poultry, and/or rabbits, 4-H members exhibiting at the Vigo County Fair and/or Indiana State Fair MUST be certified through the Indiana 4-H Quality Livestock Care OR Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) by June 18, 2024. Mini 4-Her’s are exempt from the training.

 Indiana 4-H Quality Livestock Care is an annual program that will include an in-person session presented by an Extension Educator. Once a 4-Her has attended the entirety of a session and participated in course activities, completion of the training will be documented in 4-H Online by the Educator. Trainings held in Vigo County will be free to Vigo County 4-H Members who completed 4-H enrollment by January 15th.Those exhibiting at State Fair will need to request a completion certificate.

 Youth for the Quality Care of Animals can be completed via online modules for $12 per member at http://yqcaprogram.org. Some national shows (especially swine) still require YQCA. There are a limited number of YQCA coupons left from previous years that can be used for online training. Contact Sara to receive a coupon code. Those completing YQCA MUST email a copy of the completion certificate to shaag@purdue.edu by June 18, 2024.

 Vigo County trainings on will be held:

• Saturday, February 3 from 11:00-Noon in the Community Center (Cattle Tag Day)

• Friday, April 5 from 6:30-7:30 PM in the Community Center (Poultry Meeting)

• Monday, May 13 from 6:00-7:00 PM in the Community Center (Rabbit Meeting)

• Wednesday, June 5 from 6:00-7:00 PM in the Community Center

• Monday, June 17 from 5:00-6:00 PM in the Community Center

 Some training dates coincide with Vigo County 4-H club meeting dates, but the training is open to any youth. 4-Her’s only attend one training, even if exhibiting multiple species.
