General Rules / Requirements:
- All animals must be owned, NOT RENTED OR LEASED, by exhibitor or in partnership with parents by May 15th and in the 4-H member’s possession by that date. Records should start on the day of purchase. These animals must remain in the same continuous ownership through Putnam County show day, and the Indiana State Fair 4-H goat show, if exhibiting at the Indiana State Fair. Kids born after May 15th must be from a dam who was enrolled by May 15th.
- Proper identification must be provided in the online enrollment process, such as tag number, microchip, or tattoo. If only showing at the county level, a scrapie tag number will be accepted. A scrapie number is NOT a proper form of identification if showing at the Indiana State Fair. No fresh tattoos or tattooing on the fairgrounds prior to check in will be allowed
- A registration certificate is required to show in a purebred or percentage breed class. If no registration is available, the animal will show in a commercial or Grade class.
- A 4-H goat may be co-enrolled by siblings. The animal(s) only need(s) to be listed on one sibling’s 4-H goat electronic enrollment form in 4honline. Only ONE child can show a co-enrolled goat at the county show. A group class must be entered in one 4-H’ers name but can be a combination of entries owned and exhibited by 4-H members who are siblings.
- Stall/Pen Entry forms, with payment of $5 per pen, will be due July 1st to the barn superintendent. A copy of the form can be found in the back of the handbook or on PC Kids Facebook page.
- Exhibitors are to supply bedding for their goats, bedding will not be provided. Stalls must be bedded, and water supplied before the goat(s) are unloaded.
- Each 4-H’er is responsible for keeping his/her pen(s) and aisle area clean. The pen(s) must be cleaned out before leaving at the end of the fair week.
- Goat check in will be Thursday, July 16th from 4pm to 8pm on the east side of the barn. All trailers should enter from the north drive, headed south.
- All goats must be able to meet health requirements designated by the state rules. Goats with abscesses, open wounds, bandages or stop correcting “diarrhea” will NOT be allowed to unload on check in day or exhibit at the Putnam County Fair. The Superintendent reserves the right to have any questionable animal inspected by a veterinarian, at the expense of the owner. Indiana livestock exhibitors are no longer required to present a certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI) at Indiana shows under state law.
- Goats will be released early Friday morning, July 24th starting at 12:01 a.m.- 8 a.m. and then final release time will be early Saturday morning, July 25th from 12:01 a.m.- 8 a.m. All livestock and tack must be gone by 8 a.m. Saturday. 4-H exhibits must remain on exhibit at the Putnam County Fair until established release time, unless approved by the Superintendent and 4-H Youth Educator. For any exhibit removed from display prior to the official release time, placings and prizes (ribbons, medals, trophies, etc.) will be forfeited. The current year Achievement Program will be forfeited. Exceptions: Any kid(s) under four (4) months still on bottles may be brought in and shown the day of show. Goats in milk will be released after 8:00 pm on show day or 1 hour after the end of the show, unless the goat is involved in the Supreme Showmanship or if the goat is the 4-H'ers only animal. Any additional exceptions will be at the Superintendent’s discretion.
- An exhibitor is limited to a maximum of two entries per class and may exhibit a maximum of 6 total goats. If an exhibitor has two animals that are in the same class, then another Putnam County 4-H’er must show the second animal.
- Classes for wethers and market does will be set up after weigh-in that occurs during check in. Testicles must be dried and atrophied before unloading. The Superintendent reserves the right to have any questionable animal inspected by a veterinarian, at the expense of the owner. Does may be entered as breeding or market. However, they cannot be shown in both. Market does (all goat breeds) will be shown together broken into class by weight .
- Buck goats are not permitted.
- All 4-H’ers must complete and submit sale forms for animals to be sold in the livestock auction before Sunday, July 19th at 5 pm. No late forms will be accepted. Animals under 40 pounds may not be sold unless the exhibitor participated in the scramble class. All scramble animals must be sold in the auction. Auction forms must be signed by both 4-H’er and a parent.
- When setting show classes, age of animals shall be computed from the actual date of judging.
- When exhibitors are showing animals in the arena, their clothing must not bear the name of a farm, the 4-H'ers name, or advertising of any sort. Clothing should be show appropriate. It is recommended that the exhibitor wear a white blouse/ shirt and white/black pants or skirt/split skirt (NO SHORTS) to show their dairy goats. The exhibitor’s midriff should not be exposed when standing or bending over.
- It is recommended that you not utilize personal fans unless you are in an area of the barn not affected by the circulation fans. Fans must have proper safety approved shrouds. When setting up fans, all fans must blow east. All extension cords must be plugged into an outlet, not plugged into other cords and must be out of reach of goats. All electric devices and cords will be inspected and are subject to approval by the fire department. Any violation will be removed without notice.
- 4-H animals purchased, sold or offered for sale after the animal enrollment deadline and prior to the Indiana State Fair shall not be eligible to show in the 4-H show at the Indiana State Fair.
- An exhibitor may NOT change or add classes on the day of the goat show. Another 4-H’er may show your goat in your absence for a conflict approved by the Superintendent. Once a class has been called, 4-H’ers will have 2 minutes to arrive at the arena with their animal(s). Classes will NOT be held for 4-H’ers and animals who have not arrived at the show arena when class moves into the arena. Exception is if the 4-H’er is showing in a separate ring. If you are selected as the champion, you will be penned in the arena. You may not leave the arena area until after the champions are chosen.
SCRAMBLE CLASS is open for any 4-H member who is in grades 3rd, 4th, or 5th on January 1st of the current year and is enrolled in his/her first year of the goat project. The scramble exhibitor will show only one goat in the 4-H goat show. The animal will be donated to the 4-H member and transfer date to the scramble exhibitor will be coordinated by the barn superintendent (usually early May). The deadline for sign-up will be March 1st. The 4-Her may only show in the scramble class and scramble showmanship. The scramble animal must be sold during the 4-H auction.

DAIRY GOAT RULES
- All 4-H dairy goats must have a legible tattoo or ear tag identical to the one (1) recorded on their current 4-H animal enrollment form to show in the appropriate breed class, otherwise the doe will show in a Grade class. Once disqualified due to an incorrect, missing/illegible tattoo, animals cannot be re-tattooed and re-checked at the show. Likewise, new registration papers being sent by a breed association will not change the status of the disqualified animal.
- All goats should be shown with a chain (metal/plastic) collar.
- Dairy Goats with horns will not be permitted.
- All dairy goats who are in milk must be milked out between 6:00p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on the evening prior to the judging. This means you may milk any time of day or night you desire but you must milk all goats dry between 6:00p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on the evening preceding judging date regardless of when the goats have been or will be milked again. An official will check all goats in a milking class.
- All goats competing for championship honors that are in milk may be required by the judge to be milked before making final placings.
- Dairy goats will be required to follow the general goat rules as indicated in the previous section, unless additional changes are stated.
- Any dairy breeds with less than 5 entries will be combined and shown in All Other Breeds at the discretion of the barn superintendent.
