HERO'S Story Time: "Helping Every child Reach Optimum Success"

Hero's Story Time is a compilation of books that were specifically chosen to teach character skills that cultivate health relationships with peer, family, and community. These skills or assets are part of the 40 Developmental Assets from the Search Institute. The Developmental Assets® are 40 research-based, positive experiences and qualities that influence young people’s development, helping them become caring, responsible, and productive adults. We call these assets “Superpowers.”

Hero's Story Time is brought to you by a collaborative effort of the Family Service Association of Howard County and Purdue Extension. Video readings of the books are linked within the descriptions below. Each book has a coordinating single page resource that offers discussion questions and ideas on how families can extend the story to support their children in developing social emotional skills leading towards mastering each of the 8 focus assets.

The book "Lacey Walker, Nonstop Talker" by Christianne C. Jones helps us to explore the superpower of interpersonal skills; the social competency of learning how to interact with adults and peers when communicating. What does Lacey learn about the importance of talking and listening? Watch Mindy as she reads the book.
Join Barb as she reads "Llama Llama Misses Mama" by Anna Dewdney. Llama Llama is not so sure about leaving his mama. How do his classmates display the superpower of empathy towards him? Empathy is the positive value of learning how to demonstrate awareness of the feelings of others.
How does Molly display the superpower of personal power and confidence? Personal Power mean having confidence in the ability to make things happen and feeling worthy of respect and love. Allison reads the book "Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon" by Patty Lovell.
Iriyale shares the book "I Like Myself" by Karen Beaumont. The Superpower of self-esteem, the positive identity of believing that we’re capable, and knowing our contributions are valued and worthwhile, is displayed throughout the book.
The Superpower of peaceful conflict resolution looks at how we can resolve conflict without using physical aggression or hurtful language. Little ones often have big feelings and learning how to work through conflicts in a peaceful manner. "Hands Are Not for Hitting" offers some strategies that children can work practice as they develop skills towards mastering peaceful conflict resolution. Join Britt, as he shares the book "Hand Are Not for Hitting" by Martine Agassi, Ph.D.
