Health & Safety: Safety While Walking
Walking is a great way to get exercise and enjoy the outdoors, but it's important to stay safe. Whether you're walking around town or on a quiet country road. Here are some tips to make sure you're always walking safely:
1. Stay Visible on Country Roads and in Town: Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially if you're walking at night or early in the morning. Make sure drivers can see you from a distance, and always walk on the left side of the road facing traffic.
2. Walk With an Adult: Whenever possible, walk with an adult, especially if you're walking in an unfamiliar area or on country roads where traffic can be fast and unpredictable. Walking with an adult helps keep you safe and provides a trusted person to help in case of an emergency.
3. Be Aware of Your Surroundings: When you're walking in town, stay alert for cars, bikes, and pedestrians. On country roads, watch out for farm vehicles, animals, and loose gravel. Put your phone away and focus on your surroundings, so you can react quickly if needed.
4. Use Sidewalks and Crosswalks: In town, always walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, walk as far to the side of the road as possible. When crossing the street, always use a crosswalk and wait for the traffic light to change. Look both ways before crossing.
5. Watch for Road Hazards: Be cautious of loose gravel, puddles, and uneven surfaces that can cause you to trip or fall. Also, watch out for things like potholes, curbs, and busy intersections.
6. Wear Proper Footwear: Always wear comfortable and supportive shoes that are appropriate for walking. Avoid flip-flops or sandals with no grip, especially on uneven or slippery surfaces. Good shoes can help prevent blisters, slips, and foot pain.
Song: The Milk Song
Refrain:
Don’t gimme no pop, no pop
Don’t gimme no tea, no tea
Just give me that milk
Moo, moo, moo, moo
Just give me that milk
Moo, moo, moo, moo
Give me a big M, M!
Give me a little m, m
Refrain
Give me a big I, I!
Give me a little i, i
Refrain
Give me a big L, L!
Give me a little l, l
Refrain
Give me a big K, K!
Give me a little k, k
Refrain
Give me a big milk, whole!
Give me a little milk, skim

Fair Entry
Don’t forget the next step in enrolling your 4-H projects is to complete Fair Entry! Please see the FAQ section below to help. If you have further questions, don’t hesitate to give us a call at 812-689-6511. Fair Entry is Due July 8th!
Fair Entry Frequently Asked Questions(FAQ):
“Who all must complete FairEntry?”
All 4-H members who are exhibiting a project or animals at the fair must complete FairEntry. Mini 4-H members are not required, but are highly encouraged to as it is good practice for the future.
“What all should I enter into FairEntry?”
You should have 1 entry per exhibit hall project and 1 entry per animal that you plan to show at the fair. Don’t forget to include entries for event type projects such as pocket pet, communications, and fashion revue.
“When do I complete FairEntry?”
FairEntry is open now until July 8. If you have corrections after this date please contact the office ASAP.
“Where do I go to complete FairEntry?”
In a web browser, preferably search: http://ripleycountyIN. fairentry.com
“Why do I have to do FairEntry?”
FairEntry is the System we use to let us know exactly what you’re bringing to the fair. It also allows us to input results during the fair and share that information with the public.
“Didn’t I already do that?”
You have likely completed half of the registration process through 4-H Online which is used for Enrollment and Animal Identification. This FairEntry Process helps to tell us what exact projects or animals you are bringing to the fair.
Pen reservations
Any 4-H member exhibiting cattle, goats, alpaca, poultry, rabbits, sheep, or swine must complete and turn in the 2026 Pen reservation form. This form was sent in the mail - if you did not receive it call the office! Pen Reservations are due to the Extension office by Wednesday, July 1st at 4:00PM. Health & Safety: Ear & hearing protection
If you work on a farm or in agriculture, you know how loud the machinery, equipment, and even livestock can get. Repeated exposure to loud noises can harm your hearing and lead to permanent hearing loss. That's why ear and hearing protection are so important, especially when working around loud sounds. Here's how to protect your ears:
1. Wear Hearing Protection: Use earplugs or earmuffs when you're working around loud machinery like tractors, chainsaws, lawn mowers, or combine harvesters. Make sure the protection fits well and is comfortable for long use.
2. Take Breaks from Loud Noise: If possible, step away from the noise every so often to give your ears a break. Even a short time away from the sound can help prevent damage.
3. Keep Equipment in Good Condition: Loud equipment can be even louder when it's not properly maintained. Ensure your tools and machines are well-kept to reduce unnecessary noise.
4. Avoid Direct Exposure: Stand away from machinery when it's running if you're not operating it. The further away you are, the less harmful the sound will be to your ears.
Song: Squeegee hunt (repeat after me)
Chorus:
Going on a Squeegee Hunt!
Gonna catch a big one!
I’m not afraid!
Oh what’s that up ahead!
It’s a great big gate!
Can’t go over it
Can't go under it
Can't go around it
Gotta go through it
Chorus
It’s a great big tree!
Can’t go over it
Can’t go under it
Can’t go around it
Gotta climb up it
Chorus
It's a great big lake
Can’t go over it
Can’t go under it
Can’t go around it
Gotta swim through it
Chorus
It’s a great big field of mushrooms
Can’t go over it
Can’t go under it
Can’t go around it
Gotta go through it!
Chorus
It’s a great big cave
Can’t go over it
Can’t go under it
Can’t go around it
Gotta go through it
A SQUEEGEE! AHHHHHHHH!
Going on a squeegee hunt
Gonna catch a big one
I’m not afraid
Well, maybe just a little
Inspiration: One Sunny may Morning
One sunny May morning
I planted some seeds.
I watered them daily
And pulled out the weeds.
I watered and weeded,
Till one July day
I went to my garden
And picked a bouquet!

Homegrown animals must be wearing Orange tags or will not be eligible to show in the Homegrown category. This does not include Aunt's & Uncle's or Cousin's Farm.

Attendees shared several takeaways from the experience. Macy Young learned about organizing large groups and managing her passions, while Rylee Downey gained confidence in public speaking. Sophie Riehle developed interviewing skills, and Alaina Schutte and Addison Young both enjoyed meeting new people and making friends from across Indiana.

Health & Safety: How to Make Your Own First Aid Kit
Having a First Aid Kit on hand can help you be prepared for small accidents, cuts, or scrapes. It’s easy to create one! Here’s what you’ll need to put together a basic first aid kit:
- Bandages (variety of sizes) – For cuts, scrapes, and blisters.
- Antiseptic wipes – To clean wounds and prevent infection.
- Gauze pads and adhesive tape – For larger cuts or scrapes.
- Tweezers – To remove splinters or small objects.
- Elastic bandage (like an Ace bandage) – For sprains and strains.
- Pain relievers (like ibuprofen or acetaminophen) – For aches and pains.
- Thermometer – To check for fever.
- A pair of disposable gloves – For safety when helping someone else.
- Scissors – To cut tape, gauze, or bandages.
- Eye wash or saline solution – For cleaning eyes if something gets in them.
How to Put It All Together:
- Pick a container — A small box, pouch, or clear plastic bag works great.
- Organize your items — Make sure everything is easy to find, so you can act quickly if needed.
- Label your kit — Keep a note with the list of supplies inside, and make sure to know where it is!
Top 3 First Aid Kit Tips:
- Keep your kit in a safe place — and make sure it’s easy to access.
- Check your supplies regularly — replace anything used or expired.
- Make sure your friends and family know where it is — so everyone can use it when needed!
