CUPCAKE DECORATING
Not a State Fair Project
General Requirements

Comply with all the requirements listed at the beginning of this “4-H Exhibit Hall Project” section  page 58 and “Indiana and Putnam County 4-H Policy/ Terms” section page 17.

  • Cupcakes will not be judged on taste and texture. NO artificial foam, wood or dummy blocks are allowed.
  • Cupcakes should be ready for judging when arriving at check-in.
  • Cupcakes will be judged on creativity, decoration, technique, instruction, construction & appearance according to guidelines for each level’s requirements.
  • All exhibitors are required to use royal icing. 
  • Cupcakes must be displayed on a covered solid board
  • All displays must include an attached card with the theme and tips used on the left corner and the Fairentry exhibit label on the right corner.

Beginner  (Grades:  3-5  Suggested)

  1. Exhibit 6 cupcakes standard size, round, in paper liners.  All 6 cupcakes must be decorated alike.
  2. Ice smooth then add decorations using various cake tips (star, dot)
  3. The board the cupcakes are displayed on cannot exceed 9”x13”.
  4. No artificial sprinkles, candies or cookies may be used at this level.
  5. Include a 3x5 card with the description, theme and tips used, in bottom left corner of display board. 

Intermediate  (Grades:  6-8 Suggested)

  1. Exhibit 12-18 cupcakes standard size, round or square shapes in paper liners.
  2. Choose a theme (example:  shape, sports, butterfly, etc.)
  3. Be creative with tips used for decorations.
  4. Smooth or decorated top with edible sprinkles, candies, cookies, etc. that incorporate with your theme.   NO artificial items may be used.
  5. Display cupcakes on a solid covered board not exceeding 20” x 20”
  6. Theme design should be single layer, NOT stacked.
  7. All ingredients must be edible, including the decorations.
  8. Include a 3x5 card with the description, theme and tips used, in bottom left corner of display board. 

Advanced  (Grades:  9-12 Suggested)

  1. Requirements: Exhibit: 18 or more cupcakes.  Any shape or size
  2. Choose or create a theme – be creative.
  3. Decorations may include:  fondant, sugar molds, candies, cookies, crackers, chocolates, etc.
  4. Artificial items may be used for building 3D or stacked displays such as: dowel rods, straws, or candy sticks, etc.
  5. Decorations must be firmly attached (sprinkles, candies, fondant, etc.)
  6. No foam or artificial blocks may be used in design.
  7. Cupcake liner may or may not be displayed on cupcakes.
  8. Display on a covered board not exceeding 30” x 30” size.
  9. Include a card ( no larger than 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”) with the theme and tips used in bottom left corner of display board. Include a list of all homemade supplies, all materials used, and the purpose of this display.
