Purdue Extension – St. Joseph County is now accepting applications for the Spring Purdue Extension Master Gardener Program.

Purdue Extension’s 2023 Master Gardener Basic Training for St. Joseph County will be held on Wednesday afternoons, 4:00 to 7:00 pm, starting on February 15, 2023 and ending on May 24, 2023. The location is the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds: 5117 S Ironwood Dr, South Bend, IN 46614. The cost for the class is $200. Applications are due February 1, 2023.

The program will cover core topics such as: weed identification and control, plant science, soils and plant nutrition, plant diseases and diagnosis, woody ornamentals, herbaceous ornamentals, insect’s identification and control, vegetable and fruit gardening, pesticides safety and alternatives, lawn care, animal pests and invasive species.

The number of participants is limited and on a first come, first served basis. Upon completion of the class (including a final exam score of at least 70%), you become a Master Gardener Intern. To become a certified Master Gardener, you must complete 40 volunteer hours. The Purdue Extension Master Gardener program’s main purpose is to train volunteers to assist Purdue Extension with consumer horticulture education in their local communities.
