WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The Indiana Senate passed a resolution March 4 showing support for Purdue Extension’s Community Leadership Program (CLP) and acknowledging the importance of such programming for state residents.

The resolution, authored by Sen. Eric Bassler, notes that Purdue Extension “has worked to enrich Indiana communities through comprehensive programs” by “delivering practical, research-based information that enhances lives and livelihoods.”

It goes on to say that CLP “aims to improve the quality of life for all in the host communities by developing more civically engaged leaders,” and it recognizes Extension’s role to support leadership — “a quality in perpetual demand” — throughout Indiana.

No one knows this better than the Extension educators and CLP participants and alumni, some of whom were in the audience as the resolution was read. The group, who was there for a day at the Statehouse, included representatives from Spencer, Daviess, Martin, Orange, Knox and Vermillion counties.

“The program is a great way for future leaders, young and old, to get involved in their community by learning about the county while receiving leadership development training that will allow them to make a difference in their community,” said Tom Schaffer, Daviess County council member. “Overall, I believe the program to be an effective way to identify and develop young talent within the community, so that they become skilled and knowledgeable leaders to help move the county forward in the future.”

The day at the Statehouse gave past and present CLP participants experience they can use to lead their communities. Afterward, 100% of Purdue Extension CLP Statehouse visit attendees gained a greater understanding of the Indiana legislative process, the ways that constituents can voice opinions and influence policy, and the importance of citizen engagement in state government.
