Prescribed Fire for Managers

Prescribed Fire for Managers introduces participants to the basics of planning and conducting prescribed fires including preparing burn plans. It is designed for those interested in conducting prescribed fire as a land management tool. The target audience includes natural resource professionals (e.g., DNR, Land Trusts, County and City Parks, NGOs, etc.), contractors, fire departments, natural resources students, and private landowners. The course includes classroom and live fire instruction (weather permitting) across two days (16 hrs). Topics include prescribed fire laws and permitting, fire behavior, firing methods and tactics, burn plan preparation, and executing a prescribed fire.

This course work partially fulfills the requirements for the Indiana DNR Certified Prescribed Burn Manager (CPBM) certification. This is not a NWCG certified course.

Prerequisites:

Participants must complete the Basic Wildland Firefighter Training prior to Rx Fire of Managers, including:

  • NWCG – S-130 (including field day), S-190, L-180
  • FEMA – I-100, IS-700B
