Indiana 4-H Takes a Bite out of Hunger

In 2018 and 2019 the Indiana 4-H Foundation provided funding for county 4-H Community Service Projects. The focus of these funded projects was to address local community hunger and food insecurity issues. Projects were awarded a maximum of $750 each.

Funds will not be allocated for this purpose in 2020, but local 4-H groups are encouraged to continue to identify ways that you can serve your communities by addressing these needs.

Please take a look at the summary of the projects completed in 2018 and 2019 to get some ideas for how you can serve!

Emily, Nathan, and Noah of St. Joseph County 4-H developed Meat Hunger pose
Emily, Nathan, and Noah of St. Joseph County 4-H developed Meat Hunger as their 2018 service project.

Meat Hunger is a 4‐H livestock auction buyers group that raised money to buy livestock from fellow St. Joseph County 4‐H members. Purchased livestock is then processed and the meat is donated to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana, Cultivate Culinary School, and St. Margaret’s House. As a result of this work, 24,000 servings of fresh meat were distributed to organizations serving those in need. The project had a total value of $21,308.
