Coming Together for Racial Understanding
Coming Together for Racial Understanding is a national Cooperative Extension initiative focused on bringing people together across race and ethnicity to increase understanding about issues related to race and racism, as well as working together for meaningful change.
Coming Together is a series of 6 two-hour facilitated dialogues among a group of 8-12 community members from different racial and ethnic backgrounds. The dialogue process invites participants to listen and share their different experiences, viewpoints on why inequities exist, and approaches to change. Participants deepen their skills to engage in civil dialogue on issues of race and racism, building trust and understanding together. An action forum following the dialogue gathers several dialogue groups together to list and prioritize action steps to address concerns and disparities in the local community.
Purdue Extension has trained facilitators and educators who can work with your community to plan and lead several concurrent dialogue groups drawing from faith-based groups, nonprofits, education, government and business. Or we can facilitate a dialogue group within one organization. The dialogue series can be facilitated virtually.
