Yielding Mental Health on the Farm

UNFORTUNATELY, THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN CANCELLED. READ ORIGINAL PROGRAM MATERIAL BELOW.

What are the most important assets on your farm? I think most people will say their family, their employees, and their farming community. What happens when the stress of farming begins to get the better of someone?

Purdue Extension in Whitley County will be offering a 2-hour program entitled, “Yielding Mental Health on the Farm.” The program will be on Dec. 20, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at the Whitley County Extension office, 524 Branch Court, Columbia City, IN. If interest exceeds our seating capacity, we will notify registrants and move the event to the Whitley County 4-H Fairgrounds. The program is designed for farm families and those that work with farm families, such as lenders and clergy.

At this event, participants will learn about:

  • Building awareness about potentially stressful conditions affecting some farmers
  • Starting conversations to destigmatize mental health
  • Understanding and respecting farming as an identity
  • Techniques for identifying and working with farmers and farm families who may struggle to cope
  • Stress triggers, how to identify signs of stress, and review helpful techniques for responding
  • Where to go for additional help
  • Being a part of a community that supports the most important assets on our farms.

The program is free to attend, but registration is required by December 13 to attend. Register by calling Purdue Extension in Whitley County at 260-244-7615 to leave your name and phone number.

Additionally, a day-long program on “Mental Health First Aid” will be offered on Feb. 15. Stay tuned for additional details as they become available, or call the Whitley County Extension office at the number above to inquire. Those who participate in the Dec. 20 program will receive full details on the day-long program in February.
