4-H Sheep Project

4-H Club: There is NOT a club for this project.  You are encouraged to participate in a 4-H Club.  If you need assistance in selecting a club - contact the Extension Office.

Manual 
Sheep Resource Handbook for Market and Breeding Projects. Keep this manual – you will use it each year for your project. One copy will be provided per family.

Completion Requirements 
Complete the record sheet and turn it into your 4-H leader or the Extension Office by the announced date.

 

Exhibit Options (May choose one or more) 
Show your animal(s) at the Blackford County 4-H Fair. 
Exhibit a notebook about your animal. 
Exhibit a poster on a topic from your manual. 
Action Display/Demonstration.


Health Requirements 
1. See General Requirements for all Species. 
2. No sheep shall be exhibited from a flock infected with foot rot, sore mouth or caseous lymphadenitis. 
3. No sheep will be allowed on the fairgrounds if there is any evidence of ring worm. 

Animal Identification for County Fair 

  1. Market Lambs must have a 5-digit County Tag.
  2. Commercial Ewe must have a 5-digit County Tag or Official Scrapie Tag
  3. Registered Ewes must have ID that matches registration papers

 

Animal online enrollment
All Livestock will need to be enrolled/entered online by May 15 to be eligible to show at the Blackford County 4-H Fair or the Indiana State Fair.  This is done at https://in.4honline.com

 

Entering classes for the Blackford County 4-H Fair
This needs to be completed by June 15 through the FairEntry online system.
You will also need to answer questions about how many animals you plan to bring and if you plan to sell animals in the 4-H Auction.

 

4-H Sheep Show Rules 
1. All animals must be in the possession of the exhibitor by May 15th of the current year. 
2. To show as purebred, animals must be eligible to register. 
3. All purebred animals will show by breed. 
4. All rams must be purebred. 
5. Ewes not showing as purebred will show in the Commercial Ewe Class. 
6. All animals showing in the Wether class must be Wethers (subject to Superintendent and Judges decisions). 
7. Show wethers must be in slick shorn condition with no more than ½” growth of wool or shorn no more than four weeks before the sheep show. 
8. Market lambs will be shown by weight and by breed but not limited to: suffolk, hampshire, monadel, shropshire, dorset, natural, crossbred.
9. Wethers will be divided into groups according to entry weight. 
10. Wethers for auction must be consigned to the show clerk within 15 minutes after the show. 
11. If an animal is disqualified by the health check, the superintendent or a judge for health or any other reasons, that animal CANNOT be sold in the 4-H Livestock Auction.
12.  ALL livestock must be show from it's designated area assigned by the barn superintendent.  Sheep cannot be shown from a trailer or another location other than what was assigned or in a designated area assigned by the superintendent.

Market Lamb- breeds but not limited to: suffolk, hampshire, monadel, shropshire, dorset, natural, crossbred
Senior Showmanship Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 
Junior Showmanship Grades 6, 7 and 8 (Also grades 3, 4, and 5 if a child would like to be eligible 
for supreme showmanship). 
Beginner Showmanship Grades 3, 4, and 5 (Not eligible for supreme showmanship.)

 

Livestock Enrollment - is May 15. You must enroll your animal (s) in this project. To do that you must: complete the online enrollment at https://in.4honline.com by May 15.  This is a requirement for County and State Fair.

 

Animal Identification for Indiana State Fair

  1. Market Lambs must have an 840-RFID Tag and 5-digit County Tag and DNA Hair Sample
  2. Commercial Ewes must have an 840-RFID Tag and 5-digit County Tag/or Official Scrapies Tag and DNA Hair Sample
  3. Registered Ewes must have an 840-RFID Tag and ID that matches Registration Papers and DNA Hair Sample

 

Indiana State Fair

MARKET LAMBS, COMMERCIAL EWES, AND REGISTERED EWES EXHIBITING AT STATE FAIR MUST NOW PROVIDE DNA HAIR SAMPLES. DNA SAMPLE ENVELOPES ARE AVAILABLE AT THE EXTENSION OFFICE. 

 

The sealed collection envelopes with the information completed on the front of envelope should be turned into the County Extension Office at the same time as the animal ID deadline in  Indiana 4H Online: May 15th for market lambs, commercial ewes, and registered ewes.

 

Premise ID:
This is a federal law required for Sheep. If you do not have a Premise ID, you can apply online with the Indiana State Board of Animal Health at www.in.gov/boah/2328.htm  Completing the Project by June 15 You must complete the project to be able to exhibit at the Blackford County 4-H Fair.

Summary 
If you have enrolled your animal by May 15 and If you have completed and turned in your 4-H Record sheet by June 15 and you have completed FairEntry by June 15 then Only then can you participate in the Blackford County 4-H show for this species.
