2019 Purdue Extension - Allen County Annual Report

Together we are making Allen County a better place to live and work

In 2019, Purdue Extension brought together government agencies, local non-profits, and passionate community advocates to support projects that improve the lives and livelihoods of Allen County. We saw the community do more together than each part could have done on its own.

4-H Youth Development

Our 4-H Youth Development Educators worked with 248 volunteers to teach 1473 4-H youth valuable skills such as responsibility, leadership, and healthy eating. They even used a blender bike to make fresh, healthy smoothies and learn healthy eating habits. Read more in the annual report below.

Agriculture and Natural Resources

Our educators helped train 225 farmers in proper pesticide application and improved the community's connection to local farmers markets by distributing the farmers market guide to more than 3,000 people. When wet spring weather began hindering farm production, we partnered with the Allen County Soil and Water Conservation District to guide farmers to make smart decisions to overcome the challenges. Read more in the annual report below.

Horticulture and Urban Agriculture

Master Gardeners consulted with 1,342 homeowners to diagnose and solve their garden problems. Our educators also worked to bring education to Johnnie Mae Farm by growing fresh, healthy produce for the community, totaling over 2,400 pounds. Purdue Extension also built a partnership with the School of Education at Purdue Fort Wayne to build raised beds for student education. Read more in the annual report below.

Health and Human Sciences

Purdue Extension worked with the Allen County Extension Homemakers to provide community education and valuable food and clothing donations to many agencies across Allen County. Grant writing workshops helped local people earn $69,531 in grant funding for projects in the area. A grant through Healthy Eating, Active Living helped provide cooking classes to people at Johnnie Mae Farm. Read more in the annual report below.

Nutrition Education Program

Program assistants provided education to many area schools and agencies to improve the healthy eating and activities of our youth and families. One program with local elementaries taught students how to make wise food choices. Read more in the annual report below.

Community Wellness

Our Community Wellness Coordinators worked with many local agencies to improve health and wellness in Allen County. One program worked to connect youth to healthy eating habits and active living at area farmers markets through games and produce discounts. We also worked with downtown redevelopment to enhance public spaces by improving walkability and appearance of spaces to encourage active lifestyles. Read more in the annual report below.
