Many of our experienced families will know May means a big deadline in the 4-H world. May 15 is a time to enter all possible projects and animals you’re interested in exhibiting at the Vigo County Fair and the Indiana State Fair. Read on for more details.
You’ll also see deadlines for 4-H camp registration and it’s the last chance for State 4-H Trips. But, there is still time to enroll in 4-H to take advantage of summer opportunities! All Vigo School Students should should have received this digital flyer April 28th. Please help encourage your friends to join and find out how sweet 4-H can be!

Tractor Supply
It’s Paper Clover Time! Head to Tractor Supply Co. now through May 8th and get your paper clover at checkout to show your support. Clovers purchased in Terre Haute directly go to funding our volunteer teen camp counselors camp fee.
4-H Club Meetings

Get Your Fair Books!
The 2022 Fair Book is posted on the website at https://extension.purdue.edu/news/county/vigo/2022/03/2022-vigo-county-4-h-fair-book.html. Most of the project instructions have been updated, so make sure you check it out! Each project has a mapping of where to find it in fair entry by the July 1st deadline, it should be helpful! A limited number of hard copies can be picked-up at the Extension Office for $10.
May 16 is the 4-H project add/drop date! Read through the fair book and add all projects you’re interested in exhibiting in 4-H Online.

The Extension Office needs your help to make this years Fair a Success! One set of Exhibit Hall awards is $20 to sponsor which inclues a Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion plaque with your sponsor name on it. Mini 4-H Camp
June 14, 15 & 16th from 9am - 12pm. Information on this will be sent to mini 4-H families mid-May.
4-H Camp Registration Deadline is May 10th!
4-H Camp will be June 12-15, 2022 at Shakamak State Park. 4-H Camp is open to all 4-H’ers currently in grades 3 through 6. We will be camping with 4-H’ers from Sullivan, Owen, and Clay Counties. Daily activities will include boating, recreation, crafts, swimming, and LOTS OF FUN! We will also have a great group of 4-H Counselors from Vigo County ready to make camp the best four days of your summer! You also must be enrolled in Vigo County 4-H to attend 4-H Camp. If you have a non-4-H friend interested there is still time for them to enroll in 4-H!
The camp fee is $100 per camper and covers your lodging, meals, camp t-shirt, and activities. There is limited funding to assist those with a financial need, please contact Sara for a code to use at registration. Additionally, you will need money during camp to cover craft items ($5 or less) and snacks at the pool concession stand. You will be responsible for your transportation to and from Shakamak State Park. Campers will need to be dropped off around 2 pm on Sunday, June 12 and picked up around 10 am on Wednesday, June 15. We have not finalized our camp schedule yet; the specific times will be sent to you in a letter along with important details a week prior to camp.
To sign up for 4-H Camp, you will register through 4-H Online under the events tab, instructions are on our website. The registration deadline is May 10th. During registration we’ll need to know any dietary restrictions, t-shirt size, and any bunk buddies your child requests. Spring Trivia night hosted by the Vigo County 4-H Council!
Kick off summer with a night out at the Sycamore winery! Thursday, May 26th. Check in time is at 5:45 and start time is at 6:30. Cost is $15 per person or $100 for a table of 8. There will be 3 rounds of trivia of 10 questions each. Over 20 silent auction baskets will be available to bid on, and all proceeds go to the Vigo County 4-H and the 4-H Council. Youth for the Quality Care of Animals
All beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, sheep, meat goats, dairy goats, poultry, and/or rabbits, 4-H members MUST be certified through the educational Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) program no later than July 8, 2022. All Vigo County PQA trainings have expired so all swine members must take a YQCA training course in 2022 . Mini 4-Her’s are exempt from the training. This is an annual education program that can be completed via online modules ($12) or in-person training programs ($3). In-person trainings held in Vigo County will be free to Vigo County 4-H Members who completed 4-H enrollment by January 15th.
Vigo County trainings will be held:
• Friday, May 6 from 6:30-7:30 PM in the Meeting Room (Poultry Meeting)
• Tuesday, June 21 from 5:00-6:00 PM in the 4-H Community Center
4-H Livestock
All alpaca & llama, beef, dairy, goats, horse & pony, sheep, and swine must be entered into 4-H Online by 11:59pm on May 16, 2022 to exhibit the animal at the Vigo County Fair, NO EXTENSIONS.
The deadline is extended to May 16th this year due to May 15th falling on a Sunday (you still may see some communication from me with the 15th).
Equine and lama require color photos of the full animal. The other animals require tag numbers, tattoos, and/or ear notches depending on the animal.
If you have dairy or beef calves needing tagged please contact Sara at shaag@purdue.edu or 812-462-3371 by May 5 to schedule a tagging. Goat and Sheep tag day is May 14th from 9-11am at the Fairgrounds and is required for most animals, check the fair book for specifics. Swine tags can be picked up from the Extension Office during office hours. We appreciate calling/emailing in advance.
DNA Hair Samples are required to be eligible for state fair for beef, dairy, meat goats, sheep & swine due in to the office by May 16th. Hair samples MUST be in the official envelopes with all info filled out. Envelopes are available in the office and will be at the Goat/Sheep Tag Day and Swine Barn work day on May 14.
We're Searching for Volunteers!
Do you know an adult that has an interest in teaching youth a new skill or serving as a club leader? We currently have Community 4-H Clubs in need of leaders. We are looking to add more SPARK Clubs also. A SPARK club consists of 6 or more hours on a special topic. (ex. Yoga, golfing, sewing, wildlife, almost anything!)
