2018 Lunch & Learn Seminars (Noon-1:00 pm)

December: When Plants Are the Problem: Ways They Annoy & Harm Gardeners by Steve Mayer, Extension Educator-Horticulture, Purdue Extension-Marion County (Monday, December 17, 2018). Some plants can be a hazard to people. This seminar will describe some of the basic threats to gardeners. They include structurally unsound trees, plants like poison ivy that can cause contact dermatitis, and plants that may be poisonous if consumed.

November: Recognizing and Reporting Forest Pest Insects by Cliff Sadof, Purdue Entomologist, via a webinar facilitated by Steve Mayer, Extension Educator-Horticulture, Purdue Extension-Marion County (Friday, December 7, 2018). Cliff will discuss five important invasive pests: Asian longhorned beetle, emerald ash borer, spotted lanternfly, hemlock woolly adelgid, and thousand cankers disease. He will also highlight an app to report invasive species.

October: Answers to Common Questions on Improving Your Soil by Steve Mayer, Extension Educator-Horticulture, Purdue Extension-Marion County (Monday, October 29, 2018). This session will give you answers to common questions on improving your soil, whether you are growing vegetables, flowers, trees & shrubs, or turfgrass.

September: Fall Lawn Care by Steve Mayer, Extension Educator-Horticulture, Purdue Extension-Marion County (Friday, September 28, 2018). Fall is an important time for lawn care. This lecture will give you some timely turf tips, tell you about turf information resources, and provide an open question and answer session to get your individual questions on lawn care answered.

August: Plants We Liked This Year by Steve Mayer, Extension Educator-Horticulture, Purdue Extension-Marion County (Friday, August 24, 2018). During the first half of the lunch & learn, you can learn about some of the plants we liked in the 2018 Purdue Extension-Marion County Demonstration Garden. During the second half of the lunch hour, there will be an optional tour of the demonstration garden (weather permitting).

July: Japanese Beetles & Other Current Insects by Steve Mayer, Extension Educator-Horticulture, Purdue Extension-Marion County (Friday, July 20, 2018). Insects of current interest in the urban yard and garden will be discussed. An update will be provided for gardeners on Japanese beetle. Insect identification and control resources will also be covered.

June: Soil Sampling & Testing: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How by Steve Mayer, Extension Educator-Horticulture, Purdue Extension-Marion County (Thursday, June 28, 2018). Don’t just guess what type of fertilizer your yard or garden needs. Take a soil sample for testing. Attend this program for information on soil sampling and testing for home and community gardens, lawns and landscapes. Bring your questions about fertilizing yard and garden plants.

May: Cover Crop Update for Home Gardeners: Lecture & Tour by Kevin Allison, Marion County Soil & Water Conservation District (MCSWCD) (Friday, May 4, 2018). Kevin will present a visual guide and conduct a tour of cover crops in the garden, with emphasis on cover crop selection, timing, and transitioning to vegetables in the spring.

April: “The Coconut Craze!” by Christina Ferroli, Ph.D., R.D., F.A.N.D., Extension Educator, Purdue Extension-Marion County (Tuesday, April 24, 2018). Have you tried any of the coconut products lately? Have you heard about the health benefits? Join us as we examine this health trend and determine whether it’s actually good for us or just marketing hype.

March: Answers to Common Questions on Growing Vegetables by Steve Mayer, Extension Educator-Horticulture, Purdue Extension-Marion County (Friday, March 30, 2018). This session will give you answers to common questions on growing vegetables in your home garden. It will include plant problems to expect and other questions related to vegetable gardening.
