4-H Non-Dairy Goat Project Rules

 

Goat Exhibit Rules:

  1. Exhibit may be a goat, poster, interactive demonstration or combination.
  2. All members are required to work in the Kid Kabin.  Number of shifts required and duration of shifts will be set by Kid Kabin management.
  3. Non-Dairy Goats are meat breeds (Boer, Spanish, Kiko, etc.) and any dairy breed crossed with a meat breed.
  4. No goats shall be exhibited from a flock infected with foot rot, sore mouth, or caseous lymphadenitis. The 4-H Non-Dairy Goat Committee reserves the right to disqualify any goat with fungus, ringworm, foot rot, sore mouth, or evidence of illness any time prior to show, or during the 4-H fair.
  5. No Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) (health papers) is required for exhibition. Exhibitors are to follow the health rules established by the Indiana Board of Animal Health which are published as an attachment to this web page.
  6. All goats must be checked in and penned by NOON on the first Saturday of fair. All pens will be assigned by the superintendent.  Late arrivals will be subject to disqualification.  All goats must remain on the fairgrounds and within close proximity to the barn until released by the barn superintendent.   
  7. The show will be conducted according to 4-H and ABGA rules, except when there is a conflict with county rules and then county rules will take precedence.
  8. ALL market animals shall be free of horns.  Breeding stock is permitted to have horns according to breed standards.
  9. The 4-H Non-Dairy Goat Committee will inspect pens twice daily @ 9AM & 7 PM. Each member shall clean/maintain the aisle way in front of all of their pens before each scheduled pen inspection. All feeders and water pails need to be secured to the gate and not allowed to be loose or laying in the pen. Pens in unacceptable condition will be cited with a red tag which gives the exhibitor 12 hours to clean the pen. The receipt of two (2) red tags may require the exhibitor to remove their animals from the grounds and forfeit any winnings they received for their project.

 

MARKET GOATS:

  1. ALL MARKET ANIMALS to be exhibited will be enrolled by ear tag identification on the 2nd Saturday of May (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and must be registered on 4-H online by May 15.  Goats enrolled to show in the Indiana State Fair will be identified by the 4-H Non-Dairy Goat Committee with a RFID tag. There may be a fee for this service to help defray the cost. Goats entering Indiana State Fair will also need to submit hair samples to the extension office.
  2. A member may enroll as many as 4 market animals and exhibit as many as 2.
  3. All market goats will show by weight.  All market goats will be weighed at 2 p.m. on the first Saturday of the fair.  Class and Division breaks will be set and posted by the 4-H Non-Dairy Goat committee once all goats are weighed.
  4. Any member having 2 market animals in the same weight class may choose to move 1 up to the next class.
  5. Market goats shall be less than one year of age on show day with their milk teeth intact.
  6. Market goats may not be shown in the breeding stock class

Market Goat Divisions: there may be multiple classes within a division

  1. Light weight
  2. Medium weight
  3. Heavy weight
  4. Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Market Goat

 

BREEDING STOCK:

  1. ALL BREEDING STOCK to be exhibited will be enrolled by scrapie tag or tattoo identification.  This information must be turned into the committee by the 2nd Saturday in May and entered into 4-H online by May 15th.  Does DO NOTneed to be brought to the fairgrounds on the 2nd Saturday of May unless they need an ear tag for identification purposes.
  2.  No intact males (bucks/billy goats) are allowed at the fair.
  3. A member may enroll as many breeding stock goats as they would like and exhibit a maximum of 2 per class.
  4. All breeding stock goats will show by date of birth. 
  5. All purebred, % and commercial does will show together.

Breeding Stock Classes:

  1. Junior Doe (born on or after February 1, 2021).
  2. Intermediate Doe (born on or after December 1, 2020 and before January 31, 2021).
  3. Senior Doe (born on or after August 1, 2020 and before December 1, 2020)
  1. Junior Yearling Doe (born on or after January 1, 2020 and before July 31, 2020
  2. Senior Yearling Doe (born on or after August 1, 2019 and before December 31, 2019)
  3. 2 years and over (born on or before July 31, 2019
  4. Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion Breeding Doe
  5. Mother and Daughter

SHOWMANSHIP:

  1. With the exception of Future 4-H, all other exhibitors must show his or her own animal.
  1. Winners may advance only one division each year.

Showmanship Classes:

  • First year: Grades 3 or 4.
  • Junior: Grades 4-8
  • Senior: Grades 9-12 and all past Junior champions.
  • Premier: All previous and current Senior champions.
  • Future 4-H: Grades K-2Future 4-H youth do not to bring animals to show at the 4-H fair. Show animals must be borrowed from an age eligible 4-H’er. Please refer to Future 4-H Safety and Livestock rules in the 4-H handbook.
