Crops

Description:

Alfalfa, other Hays, Corn, Soybean and Wheat are 4-H crops projects. Each member should follow the project requirements in the 4-H Manual. Grow and keep records on at least one acre or more. A soil test is recommended on all fields.

Exhibit Guidelines:

  1. All Corn and Soybean Grain exhibits are to be from grain produced the previous year.
    • NOTE: 1st Year Corn and Soybean exhibitors MAY NOT exhibit in the grain division, as it will not have been possible for them to produce grain within the current 4-H program year.
  2. All Wheat grain exhibits are to be from grain produced in the current 4-H program year. 1st Year Wheat exhibitors may exhibit grain.
  3. All exhibits will be judged together within a division. Blue, red, or white ribbons will be given on the quality of exhibit as determined by the judge. A Champion and Reserve Champion will   be chosen in each division at the discretion of the judge. From the Champions, a Grand and Reserve Grand Champion will be chosen.

Corn - A member may show corn plants and/or grain. 

Plant Beginner Division (grades 3 – 5)

  • EXHIBIT: 2 stalks of corn in separate containers with dirt covering all roots except the “brace” or “collar” roots. An attached tag on each stalk should show the planting date and the variety.

Plant Advanced Division (grades 6 – 12)

  • EXHIBIT: 2 stalks of corn in separate containers with dirt covering all roots except the “brace” or “collar” roots, plus one bare root system with the dirt washed off and one foot of stalk attached. An attached tag on each stalk should show the planting date and the variety.

Grain Division -- Beginner and Advanced Divisions

  • EXHIBIT: 2 quarts of clean grain in clear glass jars, with the variety identified on the label. Note from above that 1st year exhibitors may not display grain.

Soybeans - A member may show soybean plants and/or grain. Plant Beginner Division (grades 3 – 5)

  • EXHIBIT: 5 soybean plants with bare roots bundled together with an attached tag showing the date of planting and variety.

Plant Advanced Division (grades 6 – 12)

  • EXHIBIT: 5 soybean plants with bare roots bundled together with an attached tag showing the date of planting and variety.

Grain Division -- Beginner and Advanced Divisions

  • EXHIBIT: 2 quarts of clean grain in clear glass jars, with the Seed Company, variety and/or number identified on the label. Note from above that 1st year exhibitors may not display grain.

Wheat - A member may show plants and/or grain Plant Beginner Division grades 3 – 5)

  • EXHIBIT: 5 wheat plants with bare roots bundled together with an attached tag showing the date of planting and Seed Company, variety name and/or number.

Plant Advanced Division (grades 6 – 12)

  • EXHIBIT: 5 wheat plants with bare roots bundled together with an attached tag showing the date of planting and Seed Company, variety and /or number.

Alfalfa or other Hays - All exhibitors will show one to two pounds of loose, chopped or baled hay.

Beginner Division (grades 3 – 5)

  • EXHIBIT: One to two pounds of loose, chopped or baled hay, displayed in a cardboard box large enough to hold the hay, with an attached label as to when harvested and the variety of alfalfa.

Advanced Division (grades 6 – 12)

  • EXHIBIT: One to two pounds of loose, chopped or baled hay, displayed in a cardboard box large enough to hold the hay, with an attached label as to when harvested and the variety of alfalfa.
