The Food Systems Coordinator supports small, diverse farms and value-added food businesses in Indiana. We are also involved in local food in terms of food safety, economics, and education. The Purdue Food Systems program uses an interdisciplinary approach to collaboratively create educational materials and workshops, while engaging community members to build local economies.

Tom Clements walked into Porter County Aging and Community Services looking for a tutor to help him with his phone and computer. The 81-year-old walked out with information about an upcoming Purdue Extension Digital Skills Lessons class only three blocks from his home.

Many people are well into the vegetable-growing season in their home gardens. An activity that began in the spring with excitement and hope may now be in the difficult phase as gardeners deal with weeds, insect pests, diseases, and watering schedules.
Are you interested in exhibiting garden produce or herbs at the Putnam County Fair, but unsure about the process? If so, consider joining the Putnam County Master Gardener Association for the Getting Vegetables & Herbs Ready for Show program. This hands-on session is designed to take the guesswork out of exhibiting by walking participants through each step of preparing high-quality entries—from selecting the best specimens in your garden to cleaning, handling, and presenting them for judging. Participants will also learn about common mistakes and how small details, such as uniformity, freshness, and proper labeling, can make a big difference on the show table.
