Small Animals

SMALL ANIMALS
Not a State Fair Project


GREEN RECORD BOOK COMPLETION REQUIREMENT:
• Complete a Shelby County Record Sheet.

EXHIBIT GUIDELINES:
• Members CAN NOT exhibit any animal in Small Animal and also in that specific animal project.
• Include additional information in your notebook each year. Just keep adding to the one you start. Make it nice and neat, this is part of the judging.
• To repeat this poster exhibit, you must select a different poster topic each year. See poster guidelines on page 62.
• Animal must be securely locked in its cage while on the Shelby County Fairgrounds
• The Shelby County 4-H Advisory Council will not be responsible for accidents involving your small animal.
• Small animals will be released after judging.

Level 1 (Grades 3-5)
Manual: Shelby County Small Animals Exhibit one of the following:
• Your small animal, plus a notebook. Your notebook should contain the following information about your pet.
* where you got it,
* it’s diet,
* how long have you had it
* a picture of your pet or one similar to it out of a magazine.
• Exhibit an educational poster. Exhibit should demonstrate what was learned and provide viewers with educational information. Examples of topics might be:
1. Selection of Small Critters
2. Care of Small Critters
3. Feeding of Small Critters
4. Equipment needed for care
5. Others of your own choosing

Level 2 (Grades 6-8)
Manual: Shelby County Small Animals Exhibit one of the following:
• Your small animal, plus a notebook. Your notebook should contain the following information about your pet.
* information about your pet from the Beginner Level,
* experiment with the feeding or living conditions of your pet,
* the cost of your pet along with how much it costs to feed daily and any other costs that are involved,
* health issues (if yours is not sick, potential health concerns).
* a picture of your pet or one similar to it out of a magazine.
• Exhibit an educational poster. Exhibit should demonstrate what was learned and provide viewers with educational information. Examples of topics might be:
1. Selection of Small Critters
2. Care of Small Critters
3. Feeding of Small Critters
4. Equipment needed for care
5. Others of your own choosing

Level 3 (Grade 9 - 12)
Manual: Shelby Count Small Animals Exhibit one of the following:
• Your small animal, plus a notebook. Your notebook should contain the following information about your pet.
* information about your pet from the Beginner and Intermediate Levels,
* information about the species including scientific information, natural habitats, related species,
* breeding and reproductive information. a picture of your pet or one similar to it out of a magazine.
• Exhibit an educational poster. Exhibit should demonstrate what was learned and provide viewers with educational information. Examples of topics might be:
1. Selection of Small Critters
2. Care of Small Critters
3. Feeding of Small Critters
4. Equipment needed for care
5. Others of your own choosing
NOTE: Proof of vaccination for Rabies is required for exhibiting a ferret.
