Literacy in the Garden is a program that connects literature and garden concepts. The program focuses upon: what plants need to grow, decomposition, economics of gardening, parts of plants, and the importance of staple crops. A different book highlighting the week’s topic was read at each of the six sessions. Science and nutrition lessons were also presented at each session. Sixty youth participated in the program during the winter/spring 2014. At the completion of the program, 100% of the youth understood the benefits of gardening and the effects it has on one’s overall health and well being.
