Purdue Master Gardener Basic Training Set


A Purdue Master Gardener Basic Training will be offered to Daviess, Knox and surrounding Counties residents starting on Thursday, March 19, 2020. The program will meet each Thursday, through June 25th, with the exception of Wednesday, April 29th, according to Luis Santiago, Extension Educator with the Purdue Extension, Daviess County.  The first portion of the program (March 19th - April 29th) will take place in Knox County, at the VU Ag Center, 4207 N. Purdue Road, Vincennes, while the second portion (May 7th - June 25th) will be hosted in Daviess County, at the 4-H Exhibit Building in Eastside Park, 4-H Way, Washington.


The Purdue Master Gardener program is designed to train volunteers to assist with horticultural education programs for Purdue Extension. Participants enter a specially designed training program in home horticulture.  Upon completion of the training program, they are identified as Master Gardener interns.  At that time, the volunteers are expected to extend the information in the areas of gardening and horticulture under the guidance of Purdue Extension to become certified Master Gardeners.


The Purdue Master Gardener basic training program will consist of 15 sessions.  Some of the Topics covered are: Soils and Plant Nutrition, Plant Science, Plant Disease Diagnosis, Insect Identification and Control, Weed Identification and Control, Vegetable and Fruit Gardening, Ornamentals in the Landscape, Wildlife, Lawn Care, Annuals and Perennials, Pesticide Safety and Alternatives, as well as, Invasive Species.  Purdue Extension Specialists, Extension Educators, Advanced Master Gardeners, and local horticulture experts serve as instructors.
