Summer Community Adventures Provides Youth with Summertime Opportunities

What is Summer Community Adventures? 

Summer Community Adventures is in it's 13th summer serving youth grades K-9 in Dale. Youth identified by the school counselor are enrolled into the program, meeting weekly on Thursdays for 7 weeks during the summer.  Youth attend SCA at no cost to the family and participate in programs through the summer that provide educational opportunities they may not otherwise receive.

Community Partners

  • Owensboro Health provided a $10,000 grant to support general programming costs as well as funding for the produce bags.
  • North Spencer School Corporation provides summer meals through the USDA summer feeding program.
  • Lincoln Heritage Public Library provided a meeting location part of the summer while David Turnham was under construction.
  • Dale Community Center provided a meeting location for part of the summer and fun location and activities for the end of summer family event.

Produce Bags & Bags of Blessings

Produce bags were provided each week for 32 families enrolled in the program. One youth reported, "This is my favorite. We eat all of it". 938 lbs of produce and 18 dozen eggs were provided to families his summer.
Bags of Blessings provided bags of non perishable food for each youth weekly. 250 bags were provided through the summer to SCA youth.

Impact

  • 53 youth enrolled in the program
  • Transportation was provided for 14 youth weekly by SCA volunteers or Extension staff
  • 168 hours provided by Extension staff planning and delivering programs
  • 189 hours donated by volunteers
  • 52 new youth enrolled in 4-H
  • 3 field trips to provided to promote healthy living and agriculture
  • 5 guest speakers provided educational class sessions
  • 19 separate education stations provided by volunteers and staff on topics of physical, emotional, and mental health
