The Frankfort Police Department is offering the Citizen's Police Academy for the Hispanic community in Frankfort. This academy will be presented in both English and Spanish. The goal of this academy is for participants to have a broader understanding of how the police department operates. The idea is the result of a focus group that shared the lack of knowledge about the difference between many public safety agencies in our area. It will not only help local residents better understand policing in their community, but also help them develop stronger ties between the community and their police agency. It is through community cooperation and planning that we can ensure quality policing services in an organized crime prevention program.
The academy is a three-week program, followed by a recognition ceremony at the Frankfort Hispanic Heritage Festival in September of this year. Classes will be held on Tuesday nights from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Frankfort Police Department, 201 W Washington St., on March 1, 8, and 15, 2022. Each night of instruction will cover a different aspect of the law.
Frankfort Police personnel will present the instruction during the Police Academy for the Hispanic Community. Some of the relevant topics that will be discussed are: Organization of the Department, Budget, Recruitment, Diversity, Use of Force, K9, Patrol and more. There will be hands-on training using our new virtual reality machine for students to get a first-hand experience of law enforcement. The program allows enough time for questions and answers on all topics.
Students must attend all three classes to successfully complete the program. There is no cost for students to participate in the Police Academy for the Hispanic Community.
The academy is a free program for anyone over the age of 15 who lives or works in Frankfort. Those under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
