Cats

Any Cat project member may exhibit at the State Fair if he/she has completed the county requirements.

 

Manual Information

  1. The Cat Manuals are divided into levels according to the following breakdown:

           Level 1        Grades 3, 4, & 5

           Level 2        Grades 6, 7, & 8

           Level 3        Grades 9 and above

  1. Members will use the same manual for more than one year.
  2. The Cat Record Sheet (CO-254a), signed by your 4-H leader, and Certificate of Vaccination (4-H 777-W), signed by your veterinarian, must be checked at the time of Cat Show registration.

 

Exhibit Requirements

Complete 3 activities in the manual each year and include with exhibit.  Do one or more of the following:

  1. Exhibit your cat in the 4-H Cat Show.
  2. Exhibit a Cat Educational Poster – Refer to “How to Prepare a Poster”.
  3. Do an Interactive Demonstration.

 

Cat Show Rules

  1. 4-H cats must be cared for by the 4-H member and owned by him or her, and/or their family by May 15 of current year.
  2. Members may enter and show a maximum of two cats.
  3. The cat may be either a purebred or mixed.
  4. Cats that are pregnant or have a litter will not be permitted to show. Exhibitors may still complete the project by having their 4-H leader verify the cat's physical condition, and by bringing the completed record sheet to the 4-H Cat Show.
  5. Cats must have required vaccinations to participate in the 4-H Cat Show.
  6. Cats are brought to the fair on the day of judging, exhibited, and are taken home the same day.
  7. Cats should be brought to and taken from the show in carrier.
  8. Cats must be free of fleas, fungus, ear mites, or other communicable disease.
  9. Exhibitors must have water available for their cats during the show.
  10. The same cat may be exhibited more than one year.
  11. Judging will be on the following criteria: health, cleanliness, grooming, personality, "star" quality (if all other categories are equal).

 

Classifications:

Junior - 4-H members in grades 3-5 on January 1 of the current year.

Intermediate - 4-H members in grades 6-8 on January 1 of the current year.

Senior - 4-H members in grades 9 or above on January 1 of the current year.

Kittens - Cats ages 3-7 months on day of show.

Cats - Cats 8 months of age or older on day of show.

Household - Mixed, crossbred, or kittens/cats without registration papers.

Purebred - Kittens/cats with registration papers.

 

 

Overall Grand & Reserve Grand Champion Cat (Kitten or cat) will be chosen among all 4-H member divisions.

Champion & Reserve Champion Household, and Champion & Reserve Champion Purebred Cat (kitten or cat) will be chosen for junior, intermediate, and senior divisions.

General Rules for Cat Educational Posters

  1. Poster is to be 22" x 28", exhibited horizontally, with a firm backing and a transparent plastic covering.
  2. Place a small label in lower right hand corner with the following information: Name, Grade/Age, Club, Project, and Level.
  3. Refer to "How To Prepare A Poster Project" in this handbook for details on preparing poster.
  4. Posters should be educational in nature and may be on any topic related to cat Suggested topics include:
    1. Level 1: Cat Care, Cat Breeds, Litter-Training, Treating My Cat With Care and Respect, Cat Responsibilities, Grooming Skills, Training My Cat, Declawing-Good or Not, Neutering/Spaying, I Lost My Cat, Determining Cat Costs, Traveling With My Cat, My Cat's Safety.
    2. Level 2: National Cat Fancier Associations, A Cat Clinic, Here Comes the Judge, Training With Extra Praise, Let's Decide For My Cat, Careers Related To Cats, Should My Cat Have Kittens?, Types Of Cat Food, Feeding My Cat, Things I've Learned, Insect Pests, Cat Tails Talk, Symptoms Of Ill Health, My Visiting Pet Therapy Program, Cats Get Old Too!, Saying Good-bye.
    3. Level 3: Understanding a Cat Show, Planning a Cat Business, Am I a Role Model?, Cat Genetics, Cat Organs and Systems, Exploring Careers, Learning About Leadership, My Cat Quiz Bowl, Teaching Others, Having Fun Learning, It's the Law!, Protecting Our Environment, Issues of Animal Welfare/Rights.
  1. Cat posters will be entered and judged with the building projects during project Check-In, not on the day of the Cat Show.

 

 

General Rules for Demonstrations

  1. Interactive demonstrations may be given on any topic related to cats and will be presented at an appointed time during the Fair.
  2. Refer to "Verbal Communications Events and Activities" in this handbook for details.
