Most women (and men) have a passion. Some like to cook/bake, read, sew, quilt, scrapbook, bead, sculpt/work with clay, paint with watercolors/oils, spin, weave, tole paint, knit, crochet, needlework, make rugs, photography, etc. Sometimes the passion are children. Sometimes it's working with animals/rescue groups. But, regardless, whatever it is, whatever gives someone joy when they create, that passion can be turned into a club, it can provide community service, and offer lifelong friendship.
You DO NOT HAVE TO BE A SEWER to join! Many of the clubs get together for the social aspect. A love of sewing brought them together originally, but friendship has kept them together.
An example of community service will be the upcoming third annual 12-hour marathon "Make a Difference Day" that partners with the non-profit group, Busy Hands of Michiana. Members and non-members come together that day and sew items for members of our community that have special needs. This year the date is Monday, October 26, 2015.
Are you a 4-H family? Will you have children that go to college? Did you know that the Extension Homemakers are responsible for the Esther Singer Scholarship Fund that provides scholarships to graduating seniors? This year the five issuing scholarships were worth $500 each. The Homemakers sell raffle tickets for various big ticket items (yes, including a quilt) during the annual 4-H Fair. This money is donated to the scholarship fund. A child can also qualify if their mother or grandmother is an Extension Homemaker for three + years. Very helpful.
