Thank You ArcelorMittal!

Porter County 4-H STEM programs are brought to you through the generosity of ArcelorMittal. Adults and youth are invited to join us on Thursday, April 12th to learn more about STEM and the Maker Movement and to experience fun hands-on activities with robotics, 3-D pens, computer coding, and more! RSVPs are appreciated: http://bit.ly/BoilerMAKERBlast.

What is STEM? STEM is an acronym used that stands for ‘Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics’. STEM is very important to our youth because STEM is all around them, and will be a key part of their lives in the future. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 8.6 Million STEM jobs in the US in 2015. The BLS also found that seven out of the ten largest STEM occupations were computer related.

Porter County 4-H is one of four county 4-H programs who have received grant funding provided by ArcelorMittal to further STEM programming in our community. Through this grant, we have been able to purchase and utilize some of the newest tools on the market. In our kit, we have both high and low-tech tools to use. This ranges from something as simple as Keva Planks, which are traditional building blocks, to complex programmable robots named Dash and Dot.

On April 12th from 6:00-8:00 p.m., we are going to have all of our STEM tools on display and are inviting you to join us for an informational program showcasing our new tools and programming. The event will be held at the Porter County Community Foundation (1401 Calumet Avenue, Valparaiso, Indiana 46383).

At this event, you will have the opportunity to have hands-on fun and experiment with all our new learning tools. We will have a brief presentation about our ArcelorMittal collaboration and share what the Porter County 4-H STEM program has become in the past few months and what the future holds for us. Light refreshments will be provided.

We have many volunteer opportunities available with the creation of our new program and want to invite you to explore these with us on April 12th. The majority of our event will be hands-on allowing you to work with our new tools. We hope you will find as much enjoyment as we have had through hands-on STEM learning!

Come join us for hands-on fun, and to learn more about how ArcelorMittal has supported 4-H youth. This program will be held on Thursday, April 12th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Porter County Community Foundation’s Center for Community Philanthropy at 1401 Calumet Avenue in Valparaiso. If you are able to attend, please RSVP at http://bit.ly/STEMFair2018 to help us plan accordingly for supplies and space. Those who RSVP will receive further program and venue specific information prior to the program. You may also want to check out our Facebook event page at http://bit.ly/STEMFB18.

If you have any questions or are interested in learning more about getting involved with 4-H STEM as a student or adult volunteer but unable to attend on April 12th, please contact Porter County 4-H STEM Coordinator Brooke Sauter at bsauter@purdue.edu.
