The Avian Influenza outbreak in Dubois County has brought the word "biosecurity" into our daily news. What is biosecurity? Webster's dictionary defines biosecurity as: security from exposure to harmful biological agents; also : measures taken to ensure this security. While biosecurity is generally thought of in terms of preventing animal disease outbreaks, it is broader than livestock. Even home gardeners need to be aware of biosecurity precautions they should take.

4-H club work helps to prepare youth to be productive members of society by teaching life skills, career preparation, and by instilling a sense of responsibility. Hands on learning opportunities are provided to allow youth to select projects and activities that fit their interests and encourage progressive skill development. The impact of 4-H serves a public good by not only benefiting those enrolled in the program, but through community service and developing leadership and job readiness skills
As more people seek alternatives for providing healthy food choices, many are turning to growing vegetable gardens, participating in community gardens or buying produce at local farmer's markets. This has led to an increased interest in preserving food at home and a need for education to help consumers understand approved procedures for safely preserving foods. Consuming home canned food that has not been properly processed can lead to a variety of foodborne illnesses and even death.
