Cover Cropping: Why Start, Then Stop?

Farmers are making important contributions towards protecting and conserving natural resources by using conservation practices such as cover crops on their lands with or without cost-share funding from conservation programs (e.g., Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) or Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)). Cost-share for cover crops through CSP/EQIP enables farmers to try and or continue cover crop use at little to no extra cost during the contracted time period.

Little is known about what goes into the decision of whether a farmer continues or discontinues cover crop use after their CSP/EQIP contract has ended. Purdue University has partnered with Johns Hopkins University on a research project that seeks to conduct semi-structured, in-depth interviews with farmers who have either continued or discontinued cover crop use following the end of their EQIP/CSP cost-share contract.

We are inviting farmers who received CSP/EQIP cost share between 2014-2022 to support cover crops on their land to share their experiences. 45-60 minutes, in-person interviews will take place at a location of the farmer’s choosing and convenience. Participants will receive a $100 visa gift card or cash after completing the interview. We are particularly interested in learning about the experiences of farmers who stopped cover crop use after the end of the cost-share contract.
