Purdue Extension Master Gardener Program Seeking New Crop of Volunteers

If you want to sharpen your gardening skills and you have an interest in sharing your knowledge with others, Purdue Extension has the ideal program for you.

Beginning January 11^th, a Purdue Extension Master Gardener training series will be offered for adults. The purpose of the program is to provide a learning framework to increase knowledge on a wide variety of horticultural subjects (including soil and plant science, diagnosis of plant problems, pesticide safety, and culture of vegetable, flower, landscape, and fruit plants). In turn, participants volunteer representing Purdue University. After completing the training, participants share garden knowledge while providing leadership and service in educational activities within their communities.

Training in Johnson County will be held on each Wednesday evening (6 – 9 pm) at our office in Franklin (484 N. Morton St.) for 14 weeks. This is for anyone who has an interest in gardening at any level.

Materials and expenses for the series of classes cost $185 per participant. This expense fee covers reference notebooks, mailings, name badges, and refreshments. These materials all become part of the Master Gardener's personal collection.

While the class will be encouraged to create new educational outreach programs, there are already plenty of opportunities for which volunteers are needed. Some of these projects include the staffing information booths at gardening events, teaching public education classes, speaking to local clubs and organizations, and maintaining demonstration gardens.
