A Purdue Extension program taught Tara Conn and her family to stretch their food budget while choosing healthier foods.
Tara Conn, a mother of three elementary-age children in Warsaw, credits Purdue Extension and the Nutrition Education Programs (NEP) for her family’s healthier diet. “They taught me about the importance of fresh fruits and vegetables, and how to cook safely,” she says.
More than 882,000 people in Indiana like Conn receive food stamps. Last year, more than a half million students participated in in free and reduced-price lunch programs, and studies show that many are overweight and obese. NEP (in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration) helps low-income Hoosiers learn to make healthy food choices on a limited budget.
Conn also credits the program with teaching her to stretch her food dollars. “I would run out of food stamps before the end of the month before. Now I have enough to make it through.”
Because NEP partners with other organizations, it reached low-income families in 91 of Indiana's 92 counties. In 2013, NEP directly helped more than 66,500 participants (including 21,000 youth) with more than 223.076 client contacts.
