4-H Sewing Classes

Classes will take place  January 27; February 3, 10, 17 & 24; and March 3. Each class will be from 10 AM - Noon 

Cost for the 6 weeks is $90 per participant (this includes machine use, and basic supplies--not fabric or the pattern).  

 The classes will be at Incognito (1060 Virginia Ave, Indy 46203)

Week 1: Focus on Fabric

Discover the differences in fabrics and care when choosing one for your project. Discussions will include how to read a pattern envelope for purchasing for your project; grainline and selvage on fabric; and, how to lay out the pattern for cutting.

Assignment:  Find and purchase a pattern for a top, pants, or skirt for making your project as the fabric and notions.

Week 2: Cutting Curves

Today’s session will be to cut out the appropriate size on the paper pattern; lay out the pattern on the fabric; and, cut the pieces out for your project. Discussion will include proper pinning; care and storage of tools (pins, needles, scissors, etc); and, proper care of cut pattern and instructions.

Week 3: Care and Feeding of the Machine

Today you will learn the proper way to thread a sewing machine; how to wind a bobbin; and, how to clean and oil the machine. You will also practice basic stitches and learn when they are most appropriate to use.

Week 4: Garment Construction

This week’s session will focus on how to read pattern instructions and we will begin putting all the pieces together.

Week 5: Trying to Tie Up Loose Ends

Discussion today centers on buttons, buttonholes, elastic, zippers, grommets, and snaps. We will also discuss the necessity for fittings and work towards finishing our projects.

Week 6: Embellishments

Today we finish whatever still needs to be done on our projects.  We will also discuss applique, embroidery, and other forms of embellishment to turn a ready-made item into a one-of-a-kind project.
