4-H Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA)

November 30, 2018
YQCA

Any 4-H member wishing to exhibit beef cattle, dairy cattle, swine, sheep, meat goats (includes pygmy), dairy goats, poultry/waterfowl/pigeon, and rabbits, must be certified through the Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) program.

This is an annual program that can be completed via online modules ($12) or in-person trainings ($3). Clubs and Committees can purchase coupon vouchers for participants. Participants would enter code on the coupon at the time of registration. This will allow them to participate in a $3 workshop for free. (If your farm or business would be interested in sponsoring the YQCA program, please contact me.) We do have 55 coupon vouchers available at the Extension Office on first come, first reserved basis.

This program is replacing the National Pork Board’s Youth PQA Plus program that was funded by the national Pork Checkoff and that had been required of swine members for the past 15-20 years.

4-H Educators, MJ and Gayle, and our ANR Educator, Gene, will be certified to teach YQCA workshops. Volunteers may be asked to help assist and teach workshops with an educator present.  Additionally, youth can attend training programs in other counties. As dates become known, we will share that information.

More information about YQCA is available at http://yqca.org.

While this is a new requirement, it should not be viewed as just another rule, but rather as an important educational opportunity for 4-H livestock members. Making this an exhibition rule is how Indiana 4-H is ensuring that 4-H members learn about quality assurance (though actually the program has nothing to do with animal exhibition). Indiana 4-H is requiring this program so youth learn best management practices with their animals. The YQCA program will:

Youth need to complete only ONE workshop. IE: If Joe is in the beef, rabbit, and poultry projects, he only needs to attend ONE workshop, not three. YQCA is linked to 4Honline. We will be able to make reports to see who has completed workshops. Youth need to meet this requirement by May 15th.

New for 2018-2019

The newest change comes in the form of the online test out option for youth in the intermediate, senior, and young adult categories. This will be an accepted form of certification for Indiana 4-H members. Those individuals wishing to test out must meet the following criteria:

The Indiana 4-H Program led the nation in the number of 4-H members who completed the YQCA program in 2018.  Thank you all for being a part of these efforts! This is not, nor should it be viewed as, “just another requirement”.  We are setting the standards and expectation of best management practices for youth livestock exhibits by utilizing YQCA.  Regardless of how youth receive the content, this is an important part of the educational process for all 4-H Livestock members.

**DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST HOUR TO TAKE THIS TEST**
