2020 Greene County Master Gardener Basic Training

November 1, 2019
2020 MG Basic Training

If you’ve ever wanted to sharpen your gardening skills and you have an interest in sharing your knowledge with others, Purdue Extension has the ideal program for you.

Beginning Thursday, January 9, 2020 and running for 13 weeks, a Purdue Master Gardener Program Training Course will be offered for residents of Greene County and surrounding areas. Training will be held on Thursday nights from 6:00-9:00 PM at the Greene County Community Event Center (4503 W SR 54, Bloomfield). The final class will be on Thursday, April 9, 2020. Participants will be exposed to a wide range of subjects including soil and plant science, diagnosis of plant problems, pesticide safety, culture of vegetable and flower, landscape and lawn care.

Initial cost of the training is $130 per participant. For couples wishing to participate together and would be willing to share materials, the special rate of $195 is available. With the support from the Greene County Master Gardeners Association, participants will receive $50 of their original registration fee as an incentive upon completion of the Basic Training and by partnering with a Certified Master Gardener to achieve at least 20 volunteer hours within 1 year (August 2021). The fee for the class covers such items as the Purdue Master Gardener Manual, mailings and name badge. These materials all become part of the Master Gardener’s personal collection.

To become certified as a Master Gardener, participants must complete the training program, pass an examination administered by the local Cooperative Extension educator, and volunteer a minimum of 40 hours, representing the Purdue Master Gardener Program. After completing the training program and passing the final examination, participants will be recognized as Master Gardener interns until completion of the volunteer commitment. Upon completion of the volunteer commitment, interns will receive a certificate from Purdue University through their local program coordinator verifying that the participant has completed the requirements of the Master Gardener Program.

If you'd like an application to join our league of volunteers or have questions about the program, please contact the Greene County Purdue Extension Office by calling (812) 659-2122 or email Sadie Davis at davis186@purdue.edu. Deadline to signup is set for Thursday, December 19, 2019. Payment is not required at the time of registration. Participants will have the option to pay via credit card online at a later date. Please register early to ensure your spot in this course. Purdue University is an equal opportunity/equal access/affirmative action institution.
