Registration is now open for the Fall, 2019 Boone County Master Gardener Intern Training. This will be a 14-session class beginning on Monday, August 12 and ending on Monday, November 18. Classes will mainly be on Monday evenings from 6-9 p.m. however two Tuesday evening sessions are scheduled.
This is an intensive program with over 40 hours of instruction. Many horticultural topics will be covered ranging from soil fertility and pest identification to growing vegetables and lawn and tree care.
The Master Gardener class is not simply an educational program. Those completing the class are expected to become Master Gardener volunteers and provide information and volunteer educational service to Boone County and its residents. After completing the class, interns must complete at least 40 volunteer hours in order to become a certified Master Gardener through Purdue University.
You will also be invited to join the Boone County Master Gardener organization. This is an active group with many programs and activities to participate in. Each year Boone County Master Gardeners volunteer in many ways including working with individuals and groups, maintaining community gardens, working with Habitat for Humanity and much more. In 2018 Master Gardeners donated over 2000 hours of volunteer service to Boone County. Their showcase event is Gardenfest, held each April and attracting hundreds of attendees to learn more about horticulture and visit the various booths and vendors.
A tentative schedule is attached to this article. The cost of the program will be $160 and includes all training and materials. Family members who live at the same address may register for an additional $90 if they are willing to share materials.
