4-H GOATS

Project Rules:  

  1. See General 4-H Rules for information on Record Sheet completion requirements. 
  2. Record sheets are due to your club leader by July 8.
  3. All animal class entries must be entered into fairentry.com by July 8.
  4. In order to exhibit all 4H Goats at the Jasper County Fair, the animal(s) must be registered on the 4Honline website by May 15.
  5. All Health Regulations must be followed
  6. Posters must follow 4-H Poster, Notebook & Display Board Rules. It is REQUIREDthat all posters, notebooks, and display boards include a reference list indicating where information was obtained, giving credit to the original author, to complete the 4-H member’s exhibit. This reference list should/might include website links, people and professionals interviewed, books, magazines, etc. It is recommended this reference list be attached to the back of a poster or display board, be the last page of a notebook, or included as a part of the display visible to the public. A judge is not to discredit an exhibit for the manner in which references are listed 
  7. Goats must be owned by 4-H member or the member’s family and cared for by the 4-H member.
  8. All goats must be clean and have trimmed hooves.
  9. Every goat must have a collar and tie chain available, if needed.
  10. Stalls and walkways are to be kept clean by the 4-H’er.
  11. No bucks may be exhibited - wethers and does only.
  12. No guns - real or toy - allowed in costume class.
  13. THERE WILL BE ONE COSTUME CLASS FOR ALL THREE SPECIES TO PARTICIPATE IN.

DAIRY GOATS 

  1. 4-H members may enter goats of more than one breed. All animals must be 100% dairy breed.
  2. Dairy goat does should be tattooed (state fair requirement). If no tattoo, they are required to have a county tag for county fair.
  3. All Dairy goats shall be dehorned or naturally polled.
  4. All breeds will show together.
  5. There will be a mandatory milking of does between 4:00 and 6:00 p.m. on the evening prior to the Dairy Goat Show. 
  6. All wethers must have milk teeth (less than 1 year old) in place at time of exhibition or will be disqualified.

MEAT GOATS

  1. The 4-H member will not be required to show breeding stock in order to show or sell a wether.
  2. Meat goats may be horned or dehorned, without discrimination, and will be judged according to breed standard, usually ABGA standards.
  3. All wethers must have milk teeth (less than 1 year old) in place at time of exhibition or will be disqualified.
  4. Each member may show SIX wethers. Each member is further limited to two goats per class
  5. There will be a separate Rate of Gain contest for the Meat Goat Wethers. Animals must be weighed in on the designated date. 
  6. A Market Doe class will be held. The winners of this class will not be eligible to participate in the Grand Drive.

PYGMY GOATS

  1. Pygmy goat wethers will be for exhibition only and may be of any age. 
  2. Fleece goats (cashmere, angora, etc.) will be judged according to condition, conformation, and fleece/fiber type. Project classes will be developed if animal numbers warrant. Five or fewer animals will show in the same class. 
  3. Members may show a total of 4 wethers - 2 junior (under 1 year) and 2 senior (over 1year), and 2 does per class per member. 
  4. Collars and leads must be available, and may be used in the show ring.
  5. Member is responsible for providing mesh or crate to contain very young and small pygmy goats.
  6. Pygmy goats may be shown with or without horns, and will be judged according to the NPGA (National Pygmy Goat Association) guidelines available on the internet or from the Superintendent.
  7. Junior doe is less than 24 months, and never kidded.
  8. Senior doe is any doe that has kidded, or is over 24 months of age, and may or may not be milking at time of show.
