4-H BEEF

4-H Project Leader & Barn Superintendent  - Kerry Miller

The educational 4-H beef program and related activities (such as workshops and tours) provide youth with a fun and hands-on learning experience which develops both beef subject skills (such as nutrition, housing, and health care) and life skills (such as responsibility, decision-making, nurturing, and communications). Skills are learned under the direction of caring adults.

 

 Beef Project Rules:

  1. See 4-H General Rules for information on manual completion requirements..
  2. All animal class entries must be entered into fairentry.com by July 8.
  3. Must comply with all Health Regulations. In order to meet federal health requirements, all heifers must be permanently identified with a tattoo or metal tag..
  4. Posters must follow 4-H Poster, Notebook & Display Board Rules. It is REQUIRED that all posters, notebooks, and display boards include a reference list indicating where information was obtained, giving credit to the original author, to complete the 4-H member’s exhibit. This reference list should/might include website links, people and professionals interviewed, books, magazines, etc. It is recommended this reference list be attached to the back of a poster or display board, be the last page of a notebook, or included as a part of the display visible to the public. A judge is not to discredit an exhibit for the manner in which references are listed.    
  5. All fans need to be blowing the lead side of the cattle (head of cattle)
  6. Beef Identification Requirements:

 

REFERENCE MANUAL: Beef Resource Handbook Ohio State University (4-H 117R) Each grade will have its own record sheet. Each family will have a shared Reference Manual to keep throughout their 4-H Beef competition years.

 

STEERS

  1. In order to exhibit all livestock species at the Jasper County Fair, the animal(s) must be registered on the 4Honline website by the required deadline. April 1 is the deadline for all Beef and Dairy Market Steers
  2. Siblings may enroll the same animal(s). This extends to step-brothers and sisters. It DOES NOT extend to cousins.
  3. For steers, only county issued, five digit ear tags will be permitted. All other ear tags will be removed during the check-in process. For State Fair eligibility, steers must have RFID tags.
  4. 4-H tags will be checked by the Beef Committee during the weigh in period at the fair.
  5. A member may enroll no more than ten (10) 4-H steers, and exhibit no more than six (6) steers. The steers can be of one breed and show in the same County Fair Class.
  6. The number of classes in each breed rests with the judgment of the Superintendent.
  7. Grooming chutes allowed in barns at discretion of Beef and Dairy Superintendent, space permitting.
  8. Classes are offered at fair for all breeds entered at weigh in.

 MARKET HEIFERS (County Project Only)\

  1. All Market Heifers must be tagged by the winter identification date, usually early March. However, heifers properly enrolled, tagged, and scanned as breeding heifers at the winter weigh-in may be changed to market heifers by contacting the County Extension Office by May 15. Heifers are eligible only in EITHER breeding or market class, not both. Market heifers must be ‘open’.

 BREEDING HEIFERS

  1. In order to exhibit all livestock species at the Jasper County Fair, the animal(s) must be registered on the 4Honline website by the required deadline.  The county-specific weigh-in and/or identification date is the enrollment deadline for that species.
  2. All breeding heifers must be individually identified with ear tags or registration numbers, and registered on the 4Honline website by May 15.  4-H heifers may not be shown with ear tags that display wording of any kind, unless the wording is the name of the heifer’s sire that is listed on the heifer’s registration paper. All other ear tags that display wording of any 

    kind will be removed during the check-in process.  For State Fair eligibility, ALL heifers, both purebred and commercial, must have RFID tags and have submitted the DNA hair sample by designated date.

    1. All beef breeding heifers to be shown in the 4-H classes will show in breed classes.
    2. Prizes will be offered in each of the following age classes which is also the show order (except commercial):           
    • Class 1 - Senior Calf: Calved between Sept. 1 & Dec. 31, of previous year.   
    • Class 2 - Summer Yearling:  Calved between May 1 & Aug. 31, of previous yr.  
    • Class 3 - Junior Yearling:  Calved between Jan. 1 & Apr. 30, of previous year  
    • Class 4 - Senior Yearling:  Calved between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31, 2 years previous (almost two years old at fair time)
    1. A member may enroll and exhibit no more than ten (10) heifers, and show six (6) at State Fair. The heifers may be of all one breed.
    2. Not more than two of the enrolled heifers may be entered in any one class.
    3. Registration papers of purebred animals will be checked upon arrival at the Fairgrounds.

    COW-CALF (County Project Only) 

    1. Eligible cows include those shown as heifers in the past two years and calved on or after January 1 of current year.
    2. An exhibit includes an eligible cow and her first calf. Member may exhibit a maximum of two cows and their calves.
    3. Purebred and commercial animals are eligible
    4. The cow and calf exhibit receives one ribbon. A champion and reserve champion will be selected.
    5. Cow-Calf pairs must remain on the fairgrounds during the fair
    6. Cow-Calf pairs need to be entered into the class in Fair Entry by the designated deadline.

     BEEF STARTER CALF (County Project Only) 

    1. Calf must be born on or after January 1 of current year. 
    2. Calf must remain on fairgrounds during the fair.
    3. Calf may be male or female. 
    4. If calf is not yet weaned, cow may be brought.
    5. Calf from cow/calf class may be shown. 
    6. Calf needs to be entered into the starter class in FairEntry by the designated deadline.

    4-H BEEF STEER RATE-OF-GAIN CONTEST  

    1. All 4-H steers are automatically entered in the Rate-of-Gain Contest. Owners of the ten steers with the highest average daily gain from winter weigh date to Fair weigh date will receive Blue Ribbons. Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Ribbons will be awarded to the top two.

    • Division winners in each animal type will be picked by their respective judge.  Those division winners, plus past division champions and past champion of champion winners will be eligible to compete in the overall beef barn champion of champions competition
    • The animal shown to represent beef or dairy beef in Supreme Showmanship competition will be whichever animal type the Overall Champion of Champion Showman exhibited during the beef/dairy beef showmanship contest.  If there are not enough cattle of that particular animal type available for each contestant to show during the Supreme Showmanship contest, the beef and dairy beef superintendent have the authority to supplement with other cattle.
