Youth enrolled in the 4-H Swine project are to complete the lesson corresponding to his or her grade as of January 1 of the current year. The reference book is 4-H 134 R Swine Resource Handbook. One will be provided for each family. It is to be used for the entire ten years of participation in the 4-H Swine project. Completed lessons and records need to be turned in to the 4-H Swine Committee at 4-H Fair weigh in. A livestock record or feed sheet is not required. Members may exhibit at the county fair if their paperwork is complete and health rules are followed.
All 4-H pig exhibitors must supply their own feed. Bedding will be furnished by Shipshewana Hardwoods. Members may supply their own bedding.
All pigs entered in the 4-H Swine Show must be ear notched and enrolled on Indiana 4-H Online by May 15th. Refer to and observe the IBAH Health rules specified for all species as well as swine.
An Indiana Premise ID number is required to exhibit in the 4-H Swine Show. A Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (health papers) is NOT required to exhibit animals originating from Indiana.
All pens will be assigned by the superintendent with those members in attendance at pre-fair cleanup and set up day given first preference.
All swine entering the barn for exhibit will be unloaded at the south main loading docks between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on the opening Saturday of the 4-H fair. At that time they will be numbered, weighed, and tattooed before being released to their assigned pen. Hogs will be weighed only once.
Carcass hogs must be identified at weigh in.
There will be no washing of pigs until after 11:00 a.m.
A Grand Market Class will be offered for barrows and gilts weighing between 220 and 290 pounds. These classes will be divided by weight after entry and will be posted in the swine barn. In addition to the 220 to 290 pounds classes, there will be two classes for pigs not meeting the weight requirements (light and heavy classes). These pigs will be permitted to show and sell only if 4-H'ers do not have any other pigs that make weight.
Those weighing over 290 pounds will be sold as 290 pound pigs. Buyers won't be charged extra and the member will not receive extra. Any extra paid by the packer will be absorbed by the swine committee for barn improvements.
All sale arrangements must be made after the weigh in and cleared with the superintendent. Gilt Show – Members may show two Breeding gilts and two in the Market class. Breeding gilts weighing more than 350 pounds will not be entered.
All Market Gilts will be loaded on the truck for slaughter after the 4-H Swine Show. NO Exceptions.
A member may drive only one pig in the sale. Member's second pig will be sold to the buyer who will pay the support price. Extra hogs will be loaded out Tuesday after the 4-H Swine Show.
Sale order is determined by the pen site.
All pharmaceuticals administered during the fair must be administered by a veterinarian. Animals will be disqualified and ineligible for awards and sent home before the sale if committee verifies a violation.
The Grand Champion Market Hog must sell at the 4-H auction.
Awards will be presented at the Livestock Banquet.
Division champions may advance only one division per year.
First Year Showman: Third or fourth grade.
Junior: Grades 5-8. Past winners are ineligible.
Senior: Ninth grade and above.
Premier Showman will include all past senior showmanship winners and the current year’s senior showmanship winner.
Each 4-H swine participant is eligible to enter one carcass barrow which will be evaluated at a local meat packer. This will allow everyone the same opportunity to have their hog evaluated.
4-H Swine participants must exhibit in another market or breeding class to enter a carcass barrow. There is no on-foot carcass show.
All hogs will be checked in on Saturday between 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. At 11:30 p.m., all carcass barrows will be tattooed and loaded out.
Weights will be: Carcass barrows - 220-290 lbs., Show hogs - 220 - 290 pounds.
