Allen County Information

Allen County is the largest county in Indiana at 420,682 acres. According to the 2012 Census of Agriculture, Allen County had 270,808 acres in agriculture. As a point of reference, an acre is about the size of a football field.
Allen County's 1,725 farms ranks it as second in the state behind LaGrange County. However, the average farm size is 157 acres (77th in the state). This indicates farms in Allen County are typically small, family farms.

Economic Impact in Allen County

The Indiana Business Research Center at Indiana University analyzed the 2012 census of agriculture to get county level impacts. In 2012, Allen County agriculture directly contributed $252.8 million to the county GDP. Agriculture directly employed 3,030 people in 2012. Ripple effects are estimated at an additional $160 million to GDP and 2,090 more jobs.
The total $412.8 million contributed to GDP ranked third in the state. The majority of this contribution came from food processing, not direct production. For a full version of the report or other Indiana statistics, visit www.stats.indiana.edu/topic/agriculture.asp.

Field Crops

The 2015 growing season was difficult for many farmers in Allen County due to the extremely wet weather during April, May and June. Rain and saturated soils kept many farmers from being able to enter fields to plant at the appropriate time. Planted fields also battled flooding and over saturation which hindered plant growth and yield. As a result, 10,000 fewer corn acres were harvested in 2015. Soybean acres remained about the same because they are more water tolerant and adaptable to later planting. However, yield for both corn and soybeans were significantly lower. Wheat was impacted by disease, causing reduced quality and yield.
