4-H Career Development Events

CDE Update

Career Development Events or CDE’s occur throughout the state during different times of the year. They are competitive events that allow 4-H and FFA members to showcase their knowledge on a specific topic. Most CDE’s offer individual and team entries. Vigo County currently has the following teams.

Hippology & Horse Bowl– Members demonstrate their knowledge of horse management. There is a Monroe County invitational in February snd and state contest in March. This group meets weekly starting in the fall, contact Karen Farmer 812-239-0584 for more details.

Horse & Pony Judging– Members evaluate classes of halter and performance with each person giving sets of oral reasons. The state contest is in May 11.  Practices are are held regularly throughout the winter and spring. Contact Renee Hawkins 812-208-6889 or

Livestock Judging– Members evaluate classes of beef cattle, swine, sheep, and meat goats with each person giving sets of oral reasons. There is an area contest in April at the Clay County Fairgrounds. Teams must qualify at the area contest for the state contest in May. Practices are held weekly starting in the fall. There are also on-farm practices and invitational contests throughout the year. Contact Matt Marion 812-870-6968 for more details.

Other CDE’s that Vigo County 4-H members can participate in include: Crops, Milk Quality and Products, Dairy Cattle Judging, Entomology, Forestry, Horticulture, Livestock Skillathon, Meat Judging, Poultry Judging, Soil Judging, and Wildlife Habitat.  To find more details on these CDEs visit, Contact the Extension Office if you’re interested in more details or participating!

The area Livestock Skillathon and Milk Quality Products contest is September 11, 2019 from 1-6pm at the Clay County Fairgrounds.

The area Soils contest is October 1st in Clay County at 9am.

The area Crops, Forestry, and Entomology contest is held in November at Ivy Tech, Terre Haute.
