4-H POULTRY
ALL 4-H GENERAL LIVESTOCK/ANIMAL RULES SHALL APPLY!
ANIMAL LEASE FORM IS DUE IN THE SHELBY COUNTY EXTENSION OFFICE BY MAY 15.  
Show: Tuesday, June 30, 2020 – 1:00 p.m.

PREMIUMS: $2.00, $1.50, $1.25, Participation $1.00 SHOWMANSHIP PREMIUMS: $2, $1, $1

Hereinafter, when Poultry is named, it will include Chickens (Bantam Exhibition, Commercial and Large Fowl Exhibition), Guineas, Pigeons, Turkeys, and Waterfowl (Ducks and Geese).

4-H POULTRY ENTRY RULES

1. OWNERSHIP-Livestock must be owned by or leased (county exhibition only) and in possession of, the 4-H member by May 31. This pertains to ALL 4-H Poultry, County and State Fair Exhibitors.
2. SHELBY COUNTY FAIR ENTRY-All Shelby County 4-H Exhibitors must enter your Poultry in their classes in the Fair Entry online program by May 15. There will be NO entries accepted after May 15th. Each class has been given a section identification for 4-H.  4-H'er is responsible for correct class identification.
3. Poultry will be accepted at the appointed time and released only at the appointed time.

4-H POULTRY HEALTH/SAFETY REGULATIONS
Refer to 4-H General Livestock/Animal Rules.

4-H POULTRY EXHIBIT/SHOW INFORMATION
1. Poultry exhibits will be housed in the Poultry and Rabbit Barn.
2. 4-H Exhibitors are requested to be present at the appointed time for set-up of the poultry cages. Exhibitors are required to clean under cages after removal of poultry. Those not complying will forfeit their premiums.
3. Each 4-H member is responsible for furnishing feed and water containers, which must be secured to the cages to avoid spilling. Waterfowl need to have at least a 1/2 gallon minimum container of water attached to their cage.
4. Birds will be judged according to breeds, verified by the American Standard of Perfection for Poultry as authorized by the American Poultry Association. The Judge has the final decision.
5. BEST OF SHOW—Selected from Grand Champions of eight (8) categories:

Reserve Grand Champion of only Best of Show category moves up to compete for Reserve Best of Show.
6. Any Poultry entry with live external parasites will be disqualified from the show. Disqualification will also occur if the judges deem the entry to be diseased.
7. Any Poultry entry showing external parasite eggs or dead parasites will be dropped a placing in the show.

4-H POULTRY -- CHICKEN

1. REGISTRATION LIMIT—Any 4-H Poultry member may enter any combination of 24 Poultry classes. The additional meat classes are a broiler or roaster class. Birds may be exhibited in only one class in any given year. Entries may not be made for more than one entry per class. A class would consist of each division per breed or variety. The maximum number of entries is 20. Any combination of commercial or exhibition breeds may be shown.
2. BREED MINIMUM—Champion of Breed ribbons will be awarded with five (5) or more exhibits in any variety of an established breed and more than one exhibitor.
3. All breeds in the show must be in the American Standard of Perfection except for birds in commercial classes.

COMMERCIAL CHICKENS (shown in pairs – same breed; judging-special attention will be given to growth, development and production qualities) A 4-Her may make one (1) entry of two (2) birds per class for a total of 12 birds.
• WHITE EGG SHELL PULLETS -- Two (2) female birds less than 1 year of age at fair time
• WHITE EGG SHELL HENS -- Two (2) female birds (in laying condition) 1 year of age or more at fair time
• BROWN EGG SHELL PULLETS-- Two (2) female birds less than 1 year of age at fair time
• BROWN EGG SHELL HENS-- Two (2) female birds (in laying condition) 1 year of age or more at fair time
• BROILERS - Must be two (2) birds of same sex, under 5 months of age, not over five and one- half (5 1l/2) pounds on show day.
• ROASTERS - Must be two (2) birds of the same sex, under 5 months of age, five and one-half (5 1/2) - ten (10) pounds on show day.
NO MALE CLASS EXCEPT FOR BROILERS AND ROASTERS

CHICKEN EXHIBITION CLASSES: (Entry consists of one bird of any recognized standard breed, including Bantams.)
• COCK -- Male bird 1 year of age or more at fair time
• COCKEREL -- Male bird less than 1 year of age at fair time 
• HEN -- Female bird 1 year of age or more at fair time 
• PULLET -- Female bird less than 1 year of age at fair time

1. Exhibition Bantams Breeds (Shown single entry) All recognized breeds according to the American Standard of Perfection.
2. Exhibition Large Fowl Breeds (Shown single entry) All recognized breeds according to the American Standard of Perfection.
3. Each exhibitor cannot show more than a total of twenty-four entries in large fowl and bantams classes combined.
4. Breeds listed are for the Exhibition Large Fowl classes, but other breeds may be included. For any breed that is not listed, please consult with the superintendent for class assignment.

4-H POULTRY -- PIGEON

1. REGISTRATION LIMIT -- An Exhibitor may enter a maximum of one (1) cock, one (1) hen, banded or unbanded in each listed pigeon variety for a total of twelve (12) birds. (State Fair exhibits must be banded.)
2. Entries may be any age or sex. Pigeons you plan to take to the State Fair must wear a seamless leg band with an identification number.
3. 4-H Exhibitors are encouraged to be present during judging. Birds will be judged on show condition and conformation to the National Pigeon Association Standards.
4. Substitutions will be permitted in the same class, i.e., same variety, age and sex, providing these substitutions are made at check-in time and then only if they were properly enrolled.

4-H POULTRY -- WATERFOWL

4-H POULTRY CLASS INFORMATION -- GEESE
1. REGISTRATION LIMIT -- A 4-H member is limited to showing 1 goose and/or gander from each breed, maximum four (4) birds .
2. BREED MINIMUM -- Any breed having five (5) entries will have its own class.
3. GEESE CLASSES:
A 4-H entry will consist of one (1) gander OR one (1) goose per class.

REGISTRATION LIMIT- A 4-H member is limited to showing a total of four(4) birds, no more than 1 male & 1 female of same variety.

POULTRY ROYALTY

REQUIREMENTS
1. 4-H member must have knowledge of poultry breeds, management, feeding, marketing and showing.
2. Contest is divided into two (2) groups:
     a. Junior: Grade 3 through 7. Grade is determined by January 1 of the current year.
     b. Senior: Grade 8 and above determined by January 1 of the current year.
3. Any resource or reference material may not be used during the contest by participants.
4. Tie score will be broken by an oral test given by the judge(s).

JUNIOR & SENIOR ROYALTY CONTEST PROCEDURES:
1. Breed identification -- 50 points                                                                                                                                                                                                        identify ten (10) breeds of chickens
2. Showmanship - 50 points

The following requirements will be observed by the judge/judges.
• Upon request by the judge, the contestant will be required to remove the bird from the cage using proper procedures.
• Hold the bird in the best possible position for viewing and inspection by the judge. The bird should be between the contestant and the judge at all times.
• Be prepared to answer questions about the breed exhibited and the varieties within that breed.
• The exhibitor’s appearance and attitude are also important.

3. Judging -- 50 points
Each participant will be required to judge one (1) class of four (4) birds.
Also during the judging of the class, the participants will be evaluated on their judging
abilities.
• They will be expected to check for disqualifications and eliminations for each bird in the class.
• Contestants will be required, upon request by the judge, to remove the bird from the cage and return the bird to the cage.
• They will be evaluated on their overall appearance, actions and knowledge of the poultry judging process.
