The Purdue Wine Grape Team is cultivating the industry by taking small business owners away from their vineyard operations to a place where they can turn off their iPhones and learn something new. Winemakers from Indiana, California, Florida and Illinois recently joined the Purdue team for a 10-day tour of Northern Spain and Portugal's historic wine industries, many of which have been in business for hundreds if not thousands of years.

Purdue Extension will host a hydroponics workshop from 7:30 a.m.-noon, Sept. 8, at Purdue's Whistler Hall of Agricultural Research, 170 S. University St., Room 116, West Lafayette.
Farmers trying to balance weak crop prices and rising input costs can learn more about farm financial fitness at a field day sponsored by Purdue Extension, the Purdue Department of Agronomy, the Indiana Soybean Alliance and the Indiana Corn Marketing Council. The event will be held on Sept. 7 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Purdue's Agronomy Center for Research and Education, 4540 U.S. 52 W, West Lafayette, IN.
Bob Nielsen, Purdue Extension corn specialist, says he has never seen a growing season get off to such an uneven start as this one. Heavy rains in April and May delayed planting and left standing water in many parts of Indiana while other areas baked in unusually hot and dry conditions.
