Purdue University researchers found that engineering plants to produce high levels of a protein known as PYL9 dramatically boosted drought tolerance in rice and the model plant Arabidopsis.
Farmers using center pivot irrigation should pay special attention this year to make sure the system has plenty of clearance, says Lyndon Kelley, a Purdue and Michigan State Extension specialist. Plant debris and other obstructions could become entangled in a system's lateral arms, potentially causing thousands of dollars in damage, Kelley said.
Purdue Extension is offering a series of weekly webinars in coming months to provide beginning farmers and operators of small farms with practical information on a range of agricultural production and agribusiness topics. The webinars are free and will run noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays from Jan. 27 to April 13. An Extension specialist will lead each session.
