Chain-O-Lakes Garden class participants
Purdue Extension of Noble County realized a need for incarcerated individuals at the Chain-O-Lakes Department of Correction in Albion, Indiana to have an opportunity to learn gardening, landscaping and horticultural skills. Noble County Purdue Master Gardeners were assigned classes to teach according to their interests, and classes are taught each winter. Upon completion of the course work, offenders receive a certificate which can help them find work when released.
Along with the course, the correctional facility has a greenhouse and large garden in which the offenders can practice their new skills. In 2014, the garden produced 4,000 pounds of produce, which was donated to a local food pantry.
