Purdue Extension: Expert Resources for COVID-19

Creative Writing

January 7, 2020

No State Fair Exhibit

This project is designed to give you an opportunity to explore your writing talents. Creative Writing projects will be judged prior to the Noble County Fair, on a date to be announced.

For judging, 4-H Creative Writing will be broken down into:
Beginner-grades 3, 4 & 5
Intermediate-grades 6, 7, and 8
Advanced-grades 9, 10, 11, and 12.

Only one exhibit is required to complete the Creative Writing project. However, 4-H members may complete up to three exhibits in their division by choosing to write one piece for each category. (Poetry, Prose and Children's Story)

Exhibits and completed record sheets are due in to the Extension Office on or before June 29, 2020 4:00 PM. No records, or late/incomplete record sheets will result in an exhibit being considered for EXHIBITION ONLY—NO PLACING.

Creative Writing Categories:
1. Poetry: The exhibit is a poem or poems of any length or style and a record sheet.

2. Prose: The exhibit is one story (fiction or nonfiction), autobiography, biography, essay or any other prose piece and a record sheet.

3. Children's Story: The exhibit is one children's story with illustrations and a record sheet.
All entries are to be handwritten neatly in ink or typed. Prose entries must be double spaced. Poetry and Children's Stories entries are not required to be double spaced.

Poetry and Prose entries may be illustrated. Illustrations are permitted to enhance your exhibit, but are not required. Children's Story entries must include illustrations. See project manual for suggestions.

All entries must have been written during the current calendar year. Work that has been judged in any other writing contest is ineligible for 4-H competition. All entries must be the exclusive work of the 4-H member, NO group projects or collaborations should be submitted for judging. A “Statement of Authenticity” must be included with each entry (forms available at the Extension Office).

Each entry MUST have a title page with the following: Title, Author, Date (in the top half of the page) and Project Category, Grade in school, and Township (near the bottom of the page.) See project manual for example.

Each entry MUST be bound to keep it neat and clean during judging and display at the Noble County Fair. Use any type of a school report cover, available at most department stores. See project manual for suggestions.
