Martin County has the opportunity to join Indiana youth from other counties on a” Global Gateway Experience” trip to the Howell Nature Center, Howell, Michigan, April 17-19, 2020. We are looking to send a team of 4 youth and 1 adult from Martin County to make up the 2020 Global Gateway Team!

The Howell Nature Center includes a Global Village in which you will see re-created urban slums, bamboo huts, shanties, refugee camps, and more. You will be in an experience in which nothing (shelter, food, water, or cooking fuel) can be taken for granted.

On Friday, April 17, our county team will meet the chartered bus to travel with other Indiana youth to Howell, Michigan for an orientation and chance to get to know the others in the group. On Saturday morning, April 18, we’ll take part in a zip line and team challenge activities. Saturday afternoon will begin the Global Gateway program with a tour of the Global Village.

On Saturday night we’ll stay in a Global Village facility and prepare a meal with limited resources. Sunday morning, April 17 we’ll wake up to breakfast and a discussion of our experiences, followed by work on our county action plan. Following lunch on Sunday, we’ll begin our trip back to Indiana to pick up our vehicles. We’ll then head back to Martin County where your parents can pick you up at in the evening.

There is limited space on the charter bus, available to county teams of 4 youth and 1 adult on a first-come, first served basis. Please return your application to by October 31st!  Returning by hard copy to the Extension Office or emailed to heldd@purdue.edu are acceptable.  At the Extension Office, there is an outside drop-box for your convenience that is available twenty-four hours a day!  If you are selected for the team, we’ll share additional information with you.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Indiana 4-H, the cost to you for attending this trip has been reduced to $175 and thanks to local donors this fee will also be locally sponsored!  If you are a successful candidate, you will make a $50 deposit and complete the 4-H enrollment process which includes $20 for enrollment. You will be responsible for two meals to and from Michigan. If this is a hardship for you, please let us know.  Thank you for your interest in this exciting opportunity to learn about the world and its cultures! If you have questions, please email Dena Held heldd@purdue.edu.
