Small Animal

Division/Grade
Level I (Grade 3-5)
Level II (Grade 6-8)
Level III (Grade 9-12)

This project is intended for animals that do not fit into another 4-H project category. Only animals legal to hold in captivity in Indiana can be exhibited as a 4-H project. Animals requiring special permits to hold in captivity will not be allowed to be exhibited. NO EXCEPTIONS. Animals must be brought to the 4-H Fairgrounds in cages secure enough to contain the animal and please do not remove them at any time. Member must furnish own equipment (cage, food, water, etc.) Examples of Small Animal Pets are: hamsters, chinchilla, turtle, gerbil, mice, non-poisonous snake, ferret, bird, rats, dagoo and crabs. The 4-H Extension Educator MUST approve species chosen for project.

LEVEL I
Exhibit
1. One or two animals of the same species.
2. Complete three (3) activities in the Pet Pals Pet 1 Manual.

LEVEL II
Exhibit
One or two animals and a poster on either:
1. Your Pet’s digestive system
2. Various breeds of your pet
3. Feeding your pet
4. Complete three (3) activities in the Scurrying Ahead Pet 2 manual. 

LEVEL III
Exhibit
One or two animals and a poster on either:
1. Your pet’s digestive system.
2. Various breeds of your pet.
3. Feeding your pet.
4. A 3-5 page report on one of the above areas.
5. Complete three (3) activities in the Scaling the Heights Pet 3 manual. 


CLASSES
All species will show separately.
1. A champion and reserve champion will be awarded to the top two exhibits in each of the following areas:
a. Mammals I Hamsters, Gerbils, Chinchilla
b. Mammals II Mice, Rats, Dagoos, Ferrets, Etc.
c. Reptiles Nonpoisonous snakes, turtles, etc.
d. Birds
e. Aquatic Crabs, etc.

2. Any animal that is taken from the contest site before the end of the contest without approval will automatically be disqualified.
3. The Small Animal project will be judged during the pre-fair week. Animals will be shown and then released after the show.
