Here are the requirements for this project.
Goat
Boer, Dairy, Myotonic
All 4-H goats must be owned and enrolled on-line by May 15th. Information on how to enroll will be included in the 4-H Newsletter. 4-H members should completely fill out all information on the online system. Exception would be if your animal was not weighed at ID Day, do not include Beginning Weight Date or Beginning Weight.
The following animals must attend ID Day
- Meat Goat Wethers (Weighed, County Tag, RFID tag, and scanned if going to state fair)
- Dairy Goat Wethers (Only attend ID Day if your animal needs a County Tag. Tattoo’s are acceptable and dairy goat wethers with tattoo’s do not need to attend ID Day.)
- Percentage or Commercial Boer Does (County Tag/Tattoo, and RFID tag)
- Myotonic wethers if they are planning on showing at the Indiana State Fair in the meat goat wether class. Wethers would need a retinal scan for state fair purposes.
The following animals do not come to ID Day
- Registered Boer Goat Does
- Dairy Goat Does
- Dairy Goat Wethers do not need to come if they have a tattoo.
- Myotonics do not need to come to id day unless they would like to show in the 4-H meat goat class at the Indiana State Fair. Does must have a tattoo and wethers must have a tattoo and they must come to id day for retinal scan.
- Myotonics need a tattoo for identification purposes.
- Any one animal may not be enrolled by more than one 4-H member, except brothers and sisters. Animals would need to be entered under each siblings online identification.
- Registered Boer Goat Does and Dairy Goat Does must be identified by either their own registration number or their dam’s registration number. This number must be typed in the on-line animal enrollment system by May 15th and must match the animal’s registration paper. The system will not accept “Papers Applied For.” The animal’s birth date, breed, and tattoo number must be listed and these numbers must match the animal’s registration paper. At check-in at the fair, original registration papers must be presented and tattoos must match the registration papers and the original animal enrollment papers. “Recorded Grade” is a registered class for Dairy Goats.
- Meat goat wethers and non-registered meat goat does must be ear tagged at the Jackson County ID Day in May. The goat’s five digit tag number or tattoo must be recorded in the online enrollment system along with its birth date.
- 4-H exhibitors must have been enrolled in the dairy goat project in Jackson County before May 15th.
- A Born & Raised class for Boer Goat wethers will be offered at the Jackson County Fair. Please see Born & Raised information at the beginning of the animal section for more details.
4-H Goat Exhibition Terms and Conditions
- An exhibitor is limited to a maximum of two (2) entries per class.
- A member may enroll as many goats as they choose, but a maximum of two (2) breeds may be shown by an exhibitor in the dairy goat project.
- A member may enroll as many goats as they choose , but a maximum of two (2) breeds may be shown by an exhibitor in the meat goat project.
- Dairy goats with horns are not permitted.
- No bucks are permitted.
- Every goat must have a collar and tie chain available if needed.
- It is recommended that a dairy goat exhibitor wear a white blouse/shirt and white/black pants or skirt/split skirt to show their dairy goats. The exhibitor’s midriff should not be exposed when standing or bending over.
- Registered Boer Goat: Full blood and Purebred does show together (94% and higher)
- At fair check in, original registration papers are needed and animal must be tattooed.
j. Goats are checked in at the fair on the Sunday before the show and are released on Friday evening or Saturday, the day of the 4-H Auction. Premiums are paid for exhibits that remain on the fairgrounds for this period of time and remain in the 4-Her’s ownership.

Poster Exhibit Requirements: Posters are due the Wednesday before the Fair.
All posters, notebooks, and display boards must include a reference list indicating where information was obtained, giving credit to the original author, to complete the 4-H member’s exhibit. This reference list should/might include web site links, people and professionals interviewed, books, magazines, etc. It is recommended this reference list be attached to the back of a poster or display board, be the last page of a notebook, or included as part of the display visible to the public. A judge is not to discredit an exhibit for the manner in which references are listed.
Level 1 (Grades 3-5)
