Here are the requirements for this project:
READING LITERACY: READING (No State Fair Entry)
Level 1 (Grades 3-5) Level 2 (Grades 6-8) Level 3 (Grades 9-12)
*This project was developed for youth who enjoy reading both in and out of the formal classroom environment. Reading effectiveness is associated with higher scores on tests measuring academic achievement, problem solving, and potential success in post-secondary education and employment. Reading holds unlimited possibilities.
*The 4-H Reading project is based largely on choice. Members’ reading selections will not be censored by Purdue Extension staff or its volunteers. Appropriate subject matter is an interpretation that belongs to families. Members are asked only to keep in mind the positive youth development aspect of the 4-H program.
All posters, notebooks, and display boards must include a reference list indicating where information was obtained, giving credit to the original author, to complete the 4-H member’s exhibit. This reference list should/might include web site links, people and professionals interviewed, books, magazines, etc. It is recommended this reference list be attached to the back of a poster or display board, be the last page of a notebook, or included as part of the display visible to the public. A judge is not to discredit an exhibit for the manner in which references are listed.
4-H Reading Project Completion Requirements
- Books must have been read between the previous County Fair and check in date for exhibits in current 4-H program year.
- The participant will read and report on four books:
- By selecting two books of his or her choice PLUS at least two books from the Indiana Recommended Reading list within or above the member’s project grade level. OR
- All four of a member’s selections may come from the recommended reading list.
- The lists can be found below.
- A brief report on each book is to be completed. Report forms are provided with project booklets. Reports must be attached to the back of the poster (outside plastic) in an attached pocket made from a manila envelope or something similar.
- The Exhibit will be a poster 22”x28” displayed horizontally, mounted on stiff backing - foam board, peg board or stiff cardboard and covered in plastic with report form as mentioned above.
- Include a completed general record sheet in your green folder
Exhibit Options:
- Make a poster that tells about a book you liked.
- Make a poster that would encourage people to read.
- Read to a brother, sister or friend who is younger than you. Read him/her three or four books you think he/she would like.
- Make a poster about the books they liked and what happened, etc.
- Design a book jacket for a book that you especially liked and display on a poster.
- Create original illustrations for a story and display on a poster.
- Make a poster of interesting words or unusual expressions found in a book.
- Make a time line showing the works of one author and display on a poster.
- Make a map showing the locations of favorite stories from one land or around the world and display as a poster.
- Research an author and make a poster about that author.
- Make a poster that explains “Read Jackson County,” the group that teaches adults to read.
- Make a poster that tells about services (or a service) offered at the public library near you.
- Interview a librarian, a reading teacher, an author, or a book printer/binder and make a poster about the profession.
